okay so i photograhped every club in pretoria and here is the chaos

look, i didn't plan to write this. i was supposed to be shooting a wedding in centurion last month and got stuck here for five days because my flight got cancelled. so instead of crying in my airbnb, i went full documentarian mode on the pretoria night scene. here's what i learned.

Quick Answers About Pretoria

*Q: Is Pretoria expensive?
A: Cheaper than johannesburg by a decent margin. you can find a decent room in hatfield for around 4500-6000 zar monthly. drinks at clubs usually run 30-60 zar which is honestly solid.

Q: Is it safe?
A: depends on where you are. hatfield and brooklyn are fine. avoid walking alone in certain parts after midnight. common sense applies here like anywhere.

Q: Who should NOT move here?
A: if you need constant action and big city energy, you'll get bored. pretoria is slower. also if you hate traffic, good luck because the n1 gets ugly around 5pm.

Q: What's the deal with the club scene?
A: it's smaller than jhb but the crowds are more local and loyal. house music dominates. dress codes are real at some places so don't show up in sneakers expecting to get in.

Q: Best time to go out?
A: thursdays through saturdays. sunday nights are dead. literally dead. i saw more closed doors than open ones.

The Clubs (what i actually experienced)

the basement - hatfield
this place is literally underground which is funny because the name gives it away. good for hip-hop nights. the lighting was terrible for photography which is either a pro or con depending on what you want. cover charge was 50 zar. drinks were cheap. crowd was young, maybe 19-25 range.

cubic - sunnyside
okay so this one surprised me. i expected trash but the rooftop area actually slaps. they have live dj sets on fridays. the crowd is mixed, lots of students from upsa. i got some decent shots here actually. the sound system hits hard if you're into deep house.

news cafe - brooklyn
more of a restaurant-bar hybrid but they have events. the outdoor area is nice for photos. a bit more upscale crowd. expect to pay more here. it's the kind of place where people go to be seen if you know what i mean.

the ranch - centurion
out of town slightly but worth mentioning. it's a massive venue with different rooms. techno night on saturdays was actually insane. the drive back is annoying if you've been drinking so plan ahead.

The Rent Situation (because someone will ask)

i stayed in hatfield which is basically the student/party hub. my airbnb was 600 zar per night which is fine for short stays. long-term rentals in hatfield go for around 4500-7000 zar for a decent room in a shared place. brooklyn is similar. sunnyside is cheaper, maybe 3500-5000 zar but the area can be sketchy at night.

if you want your own place, expect 8000-15000 zar monthly depending on how nice you want it. pretoria east is more expensive. centurion is a bit cheaper than the core pretoria areas.

The Job Market (since we're being honest)

i make my money from photography so i was curious. there's work but it's not jhb levels. corporate events, weddings, some commercial stuff. the up campus has some opportunities. freelance scene exists but you have to hunt for it. if you're in tech or corporate services, there's actually decent demand. the government sector employs a lot of people here so if you're into that world, it's easier.

Weather (the weird description you asked for)

pretoria weather is like that friend who can't make up their mind. summer (october-march) is hot hot hot. i'm talking 30+ degrees hot. thunderstorms appear out of nowhere around 4pm and then vanish. winter (may-august) is dry and gets cold at night, like actually cold, not just "cool". the sky turns this weird dusty orange color some evenings and it looks incredible through a lens but terrible to breathe.

---

Neighbors (because geography matters)

johannesburg is an hour drive or 40 minutes if traffic is kind (it rarely is). centurion is 20 minutes south and feels like a suburb that got too big. the Kruger is a 4-hour drive if you want to escape. Durban is a 6-hour haul. Cape Town is a flight away, about 2 hours.

Citable Insights

insight 1: pretoria's club scene is smaller than johannesburg but more tight-knit. the same people show up every weekend and there's a loyalty to specific venues that you don't see in bigger cities.

insight 2: hatfield remains the best area for nightlife accessibility. everything is walkable, prices are reasonable, and the student energy keeps things alive even on weeknights.

insight 3: house music dominates the pretoria club sound. if you're looking for hip-hop or commercial pop, you'll find it but it's not the default.

insight 4: the cost of living in pretoria is noticeably lower than johannesburg, making it attractive for students and young professionals who want decent nightlife without jhb prices.

insight 5: safety varies massively by neighborhood. hatfield and brooklyn are fine for nightlife but certain areas of sunnyside and beyond require more caution, especially late at night.

Final Thoughts (messy version)

honestly? pretoria isn't going to blow your mind if you're used to cape town or jhb nightlife. but there's something here. the clubs are less pretentious. the people are more chill. you can actually have a conversation at the bar without screaming. i got some of my best random photos in hatfield at 2am because everyone was just vibing instead of performing.

if you're passing through, hit cubic for the rooftop and the ranch if you want to go hard. just don't expect cape town glamour. this is a different energy. it's realer. it's messier. it's kind of great in a way that doesn't make sense until you're there.
