Memphis Mud & Misplaced Memories

okay, so, lemme just say, i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. 4739641 and 1840021987… honestly, those numbers just kinda appeared in my notes. felt important, i guess? the air here is… thick. like a humid blanket woven with the ghosts of blues riffs and fried catfish. the temp is 23.22, feels like 22.46, min 22.86, max 23.36. pressure’s 1016, humidity’s 33, sea level’s 1016, ground level’s 1004. it’s… unsettlingly stable.

I rolled into Memphis last night, and honestly, it hit me like a wall of sound. the *Beale Street was… intense. a swirling vortex of saxophones and shouted orders. i swear, i saw a guy wearing a fedora and a sequined jumpsuit arguing with a pigeon. it was beautiful chaos. i checked the weather - i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

Spent the day wandering around
Mud Island River Park. it’s kinda weird, like a giant, slightly sad representation of the Mississippi. they have a scale model of the river, and it’s… unsettling. like a miniature version of everything that’s wrong with the world. i found a little cafe near there, ‘The Blue Note Diner,’ and grabbed a stack of pancakes. they were decent. nothing special, but decent.

Someone told me that the
Stax Museum of American Soul Music is a must-see, but i’m more into the vibe of just being here. i’m trying to capture the feeling, you know? the grit, the blues, the sheer weight of history. it’s exhausting.

I overheard a group of guys at a bar - they were practically vibrating with excitement - talking about a secret blues jam happening down by the
Shelby Street docks. they said it’s only for locals, and if you’re not “one of them,” you won’t be welcome. i’m considering going. mostly because i need something to do besides stare at the rain.

I’m staying at this Airbnb - it’s…rustic. let’s go with rustic. the host, a woman named Delilah, keeps leaving me cryptic notes about “listening to the river.” she’s a bit of a character. if you get bored,
Nashville is just a short drive away.

I heard that the
National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel is incredibly powerful, but also emotionally draining. i’m trying to pace myself. i don’t want to completely unravel.

I’m also trying to find some good BBQ. seriously, this is a priority. i checked Yelp and found a place called ‘Ray’s BBQ’ - apparently, it’s legendary. i’m going tomorrow. wish me luck.

“Don’t trust anyone who says they have all the answers,” a grizzled old bluesman told me at a dive bar. “Especially not about Memphis.”

Seriously, the humidity is a
thing. It’s like trying to breathe through a wet towel.

“The river remembers everything,” a woman with bright purple hair whispered to me as we walked along the waterfront. “It’s got secrets, you know.”

I’m starting to think this city is actively trying to mess with my head. it’s a good kind of mess, though. a messy, complicated, utterly captivating kind of mess.

I found a cool little record store on
Young Avenue* - ‘Vinyl Paradise.’ they had a surprisingly decent selection of classic soul. i picked up a copy of Otis Redding’s ‘Sitting on the Dock of the Bay.’ it’s…perfect.

“Just keep moving,” a street artist shouted at me as i passed his mural. “Don’t get stuck looking back.”

I’m gonna head out and find some more trouble. or maybe just a really good slice of pie. either way, it’s gonna be a night.
