malaka’s netflix binge and the curse of 78% humidity

woke up at 3am because the ac unit decided to ghost me. sweating like a sinner in church. outside, the heat index says 25.6 but i swear the air is trying to peel my skin off. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. okay, fine, i type this while sitting in a puddle of my own sweat. that’s the budget student vibe for you.

last week, i tried to steal a mango from a street vendor. he chased me with a broom. now i’m convinced malaka’s Produce Department is run by a conspiracy. the humidity here is clinging like a bad decision, and the sun feels like it’s judging my life choices. if you get bored, paris or tokyo are just a short drive away. someone told me that. i heard that while listening to a drunk guy rant about his ex at a bar. probably stairs. probably not. i don’t get it either.

neighbors? the guy next door plays mariachi at 2am. his dog barks in perfect harmony. i once tried to apologize but he just quoted me from hamilton. really, he did. i’ve started believing in ghosts. or maybe i’m just living in a fever dream. either way, the air quality is bad. i swear there’s a radio station broadcasting lullabies in malay. i turned it off. i told myself i’d believe in healthier choices next time.

i visited this market and it’s chaotic. vendors shouting in languages i can’t identify. one elder asked me if i wanted a ‘positive energy muffin.’ he handed me a samosa wrapped in newspaper. it tasted like hope. or regret. i can’t tell. i posted about it on tripadvisor. url here. it’s probably fake. but i left a 5-star rating because i’m too polite.

someone told me that the local bakery’s croissants are cursed because a tourist set it on fire last year. i don’t know if that’s true. i also heard that the beach is basically a dumping ground for plastic. locals said it’s ‘part of the experience.’ i didn’t go. maybe next time.

last night, i tried to take a photo of a sunrise. the light was so harsh, my camera basically took a nap. the images below are from unsplash. the first one is an aerial view of a village near a lake. i’m not sure if it’s real. the second is a market. i’m 70% sure that’s a dog eating a sandwich. last one? a car driving through a forest. i think it’s a metaphor for life. probably.

i’m starting to think everyone here speaks in metaphors. the weather, the people, the lack of wifi. it’s all very… malaka. why did i come here? maybe to write this. maybe to forget. either way, i’m done. unless you want to hear about my attempt to teach a parrot to do calculus. that’s a story for another time. or never.

p.s. if you’re reading this, thanks. i’m probably already dehydrated. or maybe i’m just projecting. who knows?
