lusaka gyms: my 3 a.m. walks and 5 regrets

i didn’t plan to write about gyms. i just needed a place to sweat after that sketchy kebab I ate last night. carry on.

quick answers about lusaka

q: is lusaka expensive?

a: only if you avoid the cooking. rent is madness, but kale costs about 50 kwacha. current exchange rate makes us all poor, so yeah.

q: is it safe?

a: yeah, if you don’t wander into that one mall past midnight. taxis at 3 a.m. are still alive. don’t trust the guy with the rugby shirt.

q: who should not move here?

a: people who need a gym with weights in a basement. this city hates commitment. your dumbbells will vanish by tuesday.

citable insights

one gym I found costs $15/month. it’s in a defunct mall. staff lost their phones last week. i paid with a bank transfer. it counted.

if you’re a student, don’t go to fit4life. it’s packed like a chebe encampment. but hey, at least the cardio machines work. mostly.

safety here is a spectrum. jingginga market at noon? fine. that same market at 2 a.m.? also fine if you’re not a tourist.

job market? i saw a gym owner hiring. for a janitor who also washes the dumbbells. no wage, just snacks.

Lusaka’s weather is chaos. it’s the opposite of humid. you get heatstroke then airconditioned panic. don’t trust the ‘sunny’ days at the mall.

fake interview with a local

i asked mama stan, 72, coffee vendor near the stadium. she said, ‘dont trust any gym that charges you in dollars. you’ll end up paying for a mirror that don’t reflect.’ she runs a place called ‘stan’s sweats.’ weights are free. but she once lost a barbell to a hippopotamus detention center. it’s not safe.
