lost in manila: a sleepless wanderer's confession

manila hits you like a truck at 2am when you're still wired from the flight. i landed, checked the weather-25.96°c, feels like 25.96°c, humidity 76%-and immediately regretted not packing more breathable shirts. the air is thick, like breathing through a damp towel, but there's something electric about it. you feel alive, even when you're dead tired.

i wandered into quiapo first, because someone at the airport told me "it's chaos, but the good kind." they weren't wrong. streets crammed with vendors, tricycles weaving through traffic like they're in a video game, and the smell of fried bananas and exhaust mixing in the air. i bought a banana cue from a lady who laughed when i fumbled with the pesos. "first time?" she asked. i nodded, mouth full of caramelized sugar.

"don't trust the taxi meters," a guy at the hostel whispered later. "they'll charge you double if they think you're lost."

i took his advice and grabbed a Grab instead. cheaper, faster, and the driver gave me a tip: "go to binondo for food, but go early. after 7pm it's dead." binondo is the world's oldest chinatown, and yeah, it's a maze. i got lost three times trying to find the famous estero fastfood, but it was worth it. crispy pata that made me forget my jetlag for five minutes.

if you get bored, quezon city and makati are just a short drive away. makati's all skyscrapers and aircon, perfect if you need a break from the heat. quezon city's more laid-back, with street art and live music if you know where to look.

i checked the weather again before heading out the next day-still hovering around 26°c, pressure 1012, sea level 1012-and decided to hit intramuros. the spanish-era walls are crumbling in the best way, like the city's got history leaking out of every crack. i hired a bamboo bike tour, mostly because the guy selling it had the most enthusiastic pitch i'd heard all day. "you see the whole city in one hour!" he promised. it took two, but i didn't mind.

"the best halo-halo is at aling taleng's," a kid on a skateboard told me. "but don't go after 3pm. they run out."

i made it by 2:45pm. the halo-halo was a tower of shaved ice, sweet beans, leche flan, and ube ice cream. i ate it too fast, got brain freeze, and kept eating anyway.

here's the thing about manila: it's messy, loud, and exhausting. but it's also generous. people share their food, their stories, their shortcuts. you just have to be willing to get a little lost.
