Lisbon’s a Blur: Lost in Pastel and Pastéis de Nata
okay, so, i’m pretty sure i’m running on caffeine and the sheer disbelief that i actually made it here. lisbon. it’s… a lot. like, a beautiful, crumbling, slightly-too-sunny lot. i landed yesterday and immediately felt like i’d stepped into a really, really good dream, or maybe a slightly unsettling watercolor painting. the air smells like salt and something vaguely floral, and the light… man, the light. it’s doing things to my eyes.
my phone’s already dead, which is a tragedy because i was just about to take a picture of a tiny, incredibly ornate doorway. seriously, every building here seems to have a secret, a tiny balcony overflowing with geraniums, or a tile panel that tells a story i can’t quite decipher. i’m pretty sure i’m going to spend the next week just wandering around, getting hopelessly lost, and eating way too many pastries.
i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. it’s like 22 degrees, which is perfect, honestly. not too hot, not too cold. just… there. the humidity is hovering around 60, which is nice and sticky. it’s making my hair do weird things, which is a bonus, i guess?
i’m staying in Alfama, which is basically a giant, winding labyrinth of cobblestone streets. it’s loud, it’s crowded, and it’s absolutely buzzing. i found this little guesthouse - ‘Casa da Rosa’ - through a random forum. someone told me that the owner, Maria, makes the best pastel de nata this side of the Atlantic. i’m taking that as gospel.
Speaking of food, i hit up Time Out Market Lisboa today. it’s basically a massive food hall, and i spent a solid hour just staring at everything. i got a bifana (pork sandwich) and a vinho verde - it was… fine. i’m holding out for Maria’s nata. i need to check out some more restaurants on Yelp: https://www.yelp.com/map/lisbon-restaurants
i overheard some guys at the bar talking about Fado. apparently, it’s a traditional Portuguese music genre, and it’s supposed to be incredibly melancholic. i’m not sure i’m ready for that level of sadness, but i’m definitely going to check it out. maybe after a few more pastries.
I’m trying to keep track of everything, but my brain feels like it’s running on dial-up. here’s a quick rundown of my essentials:
Camera: Canon 5D Mark IV (obviously)
*Lenses: 35mm, 50mm, 85mm - can’t live without ‘em.
*Notebook & Pen: For capturing all the chaotic thoughts.
*Portable Charger: Because, you know, phone.
*Comfortable Shoes: Seriously, the cobblestones are brutal.
*Sunscreen: The sun is a sneaky bastard.
*Phrasebook:* “Onde fica o banheiro?” is my new best friend.
Someone told me that the Jerónimos Monastery is a must-see. it’s apparently stunning. i’m adding it to the list. i’m also going to check out the Belém Tower - it looks like something out of a fairytale. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g189499-d189498-Reviews-Jerónimos_Monastery-Lisbon_Lisbon_District.html
If you get bored, Porto is just a short drive away. it’s supposed to be equally charming, but with a slightly different vibe. i’m thinking of checking it out next week.
I’m starting to think i should have brought a map. or maybe just embraced the chaos. i’m leaning towards the latter.
Okay, I need more coffee. and maybe another pastel de nata. seriously, i’m considering moving here.
I heard that the LX Factory is a cool place to check out - it’s apparently a converted industrial complex with shops, restaurants, and art installations. https://www.lxfactory.com/
Honestly, this city is just… overwhelming in the best way. it’s like a beautiful, slightly frantic dream. i’m going to try and sleep, but i have a feeling i’ll be awake for hours, just thinking about all the things i want to see and do.
