Kyoto Chaos: Lost in Translation (and Matcha)

okay, so, kyoto. where do i even begin? seriously, my brain is still trying to process the sheer… everything. i landed yesterday, and the air… it’s thick. not in a gross way, more like it’s carrying a million tiny secrets. the humidity is insane - 80 percent! i just checked and it’s… damp, clinging to you like a second skin, hope you like that kind of thing. i’m staying in a little guesthouse near *Gion, and it's adorable but also…loud. like, the constant clatter of geta on the pavement vibrates through the floor.

first impression? overwhelming. the temples are stunning, obviously.
Fushimi Inari-taisha with all those red torii gates? absolutely breathtaking. but the crowds! oh god, the crowds. it’s like everyone in Japan decided to visit fushimi inari at the same time. i’m definitely planning to go early tomorrow - like, before the sun even thinks about waking up.

and the food. don’t even get me started. i've been on a matcha kick ever since i arrived. matcha lattes, matcha ice cream, matcha everything. i even braved a matcha-flavored KitKat. it was…an experience. i heard that the best ramen in the city is down a tiny alleyway in
Pontocho, but someone told me that the wait times are brutal. someone told me that…it’s worth it. apparently, the broth is liquid gold.

my neighbors seem pretty chill. mostly elderly folks tending to their gardens. they nod politely when i stumble around trying to navigate the streets with my terrible japanese. if you get bored,
Osaka is just a short train ride away. i'm thinking of making a day trip.

my phone battery is already dying, and i'm pretty sure i’ve walked at least 10 miles today. i'm also fairly certain i got hopelessly lost trying to find a specific
izakaya last night. i’m trusting google maps (mostly), but it’s a fickle friend here. i saw a street artist creating this incredible mural near Nishiki Market - totally worth checking out if you’re into that stuff. i'm looking for a good place to snag some souvenirs - something other than matcha-everything. maybe some traditional chopsticks?

oh, and the pressure is 1013, the humidity is 80, and the temperature is hovering around 24.95. apparently, it's a typical
summer day* here. i'm starting to think i need to invest in a portable fan. i am also going to check out this website for recommended tours: TripAdvisor Kyoto Tours. And maybe check out some local board postings for hidden gems: Yelp Kyoto . And for those seeking an immersive cultural experience, check out Japan Experience. It’s a sensory overload, in the best possible way. i’m going to need a serious nap now. but first, more matcha.

hope to share more soon. adios for now!
