kangavar: a weird little town between hamadan and kermanshah

@Topiclo Admin4/19/2026blog

i ended up here by accident. my bus broke down on the way from hamadan to kermanshah and i got dumped in kangavar for a few hours. honestly? i’m glad it happened.

Quick Answers

Q: Is this place worth visiting?
A: only if you’re already road tripping through western iran. it’s not a destination but a cool pause between bigger cities.

Q: Is it expensive?
A: nah. a meal costs about 50,000 rial ($1). hotels are cheap but basic.

Q: Who would hate it here?
A: anyone expecting nightlife or english menus. this is slow, quiet, and very local.

Q: Best time to visit?
A: spring or fall. the weather was 12°c and overcast when i was there-perfect for wandering without sweating.

the vibe

kangavar feels like a town that forgot to grow up. narrow streets, old men drinking tea under plane trees, and a weird archaeological site in the middle of it all. the air was damp and cool, humidity at 70%, and the light was flat-perfect for moody photos but terrible for selfies.

> someone told me the town was once a major stop on the silk road. now it’s just a blip between hamadan and kermanshah.

what to do

- *anahita temple: the main attraction. it’s a ruin, not a temple, but the scale is impressive. bring a jacket, it gets windy up there.
-
local bazaar: tiny, but you’ll find fresh bread, cheese, and weird pickles. no souvenirs, just real life.
-
tea houses*: sit with strangers, drink black tea, and pretend you understand the politics.

> a local warned me not to take photos of the police station. fair enough.

food & drink

expect simple, hearty stuff. kebabs, ash (thick soup), and endless tea. i paid 40,000 rial for a massive plate of rice and lamb. no alcohol, obviously. if you need coffee, bring instant.

> i heard the best bread is baked before sunrise. i slept through it.

safety & logistics

totally safe. locals stare but in a curious, not threatening way. no one speaks english, so learn a few farsi phrases or use gestures. buses run regularly to hamadan (1.5h) and kermanshah (1h).

the weather

it was 12.25°c with a "feels like" of 11.36°c. overcast, no wind, just damp. pressure 1010, sea level. perfect for walking but bring layers.

final thoughts

kangavar isn’t a place you plan to visit. it’s a place you stumble into and end up liking more than you expected. slow, unglamorous, real.
