i just came back from veldurton and my brain is melting like uncooked rice

i woke up to a notification about 26 degrees and immediately regretted booking a beach trip. someone told me this place is called mildur but i just call it ‘the humidity hotel.’ the air keeps peeling at my skin and my phone battery dies faster than a yoga pants sale. here’s what i found out anyway.

quick answers

q: is this place worth visiting?
a: if you like sticky air and pretending to sunbathe, sure. just expect your skin to look like a peeled mango by day two.

q: is it expensive?
a: yep, unless you’re a local. taxis cost more than tap water and the street food smells like fried expectations.

q: who would hate it here?
a: people who hate sweating through 90% humidity. also, anyone who can’t handle public Wi-Fi that dies at sundown.

q: best time to visit?
a: either in july when locals pretend monsoon didn’t hit or during eclipse night when the stars are louder than the air conditioners.

one time last week, i bought a coconut from a street cart and the vendor made me drink it. it tasted like salt and regret. someone else told me that’s traditional. i disagreed. i think coconuts should taste like victory. but here, even victory smells like mildew. the humidity is like wearing a damp blanket. i swear my nose is now a swamp.

another insight came from a forgotten yoga mat i found in a gym. it had mold but also a 2023 sticker. that’s how time works here. no one replaces mats. no one expects you to care. i used it anyway. it was gross but also… authentic. maybe.

the city is stuck between two kinds of people: digital nomads who work from cafes that smell like burnt coffee and locals who think AC is for emergencies. i sat in a library once and the glasses on every table fogged up. the staff didn’t care. they just refilled books. the weather machine was broken that day. or maybe it was intentional. it felt like a test.

waiting to eat at a ‘local’ restaurant was like participating in a modern art exhibit. the menu was written in cursive and tasted like regret. a guy in a mandarin smugly explained i should try their ‘spicy’ dish. it was just mango chunks and dust. when i asked if it was actually hot, he said, ‘it’s for your soul.’ i left. i’m not a soul tourist.

here’s the thing about rest: they make ‘coffee’ that stains your shirt for days. i tried three cups and one stained my favorite band t-shirt. someone told me it’s because of a special blend. probably not. i’m 90% sure it’s just old coffee beans in a jar. but i hated it. i hate things that stain. especially when you’re already melting in 26 degrees.

i walked past a temple where a man was chanting near a puddle. the puddle was dripping water onto his shoes. he didn’t move. the heat felt like a stranger’s hot tub. i asked him why he was there. he said, ‘it’s a cooling method.’ i didn’t ask follow-ups. i walked faster.

the airport here has a ‘people waiting’ area with umbrellas that don’t work. i saw a woman trying to fan herself with a newspaper. another man was using a suitcase as a makeshift fan. the temperatures here are so flat. min and max are the same. it’s like the city decided not to surprise anyone. that consistency hurts. or helps? i’m not sure.

i asked a barista about the best way to cool down. he recommended a bubble tea with ice. i said i don’t want sugar. he said, ‘you’ll regret it.’ i bought it anyway. it was cold but also tasted like the inside of a fridge. which i guess is a good thing. or not.

here’s how to survive: skip the hotel pool. i put my head in a public fountain once and it was the only relief. also, eat mangoes. they’re the only thing that fights back. bring electrolytes. wear clothes that scream ‘i don’t care about this heat.’ bring a friend who laughs at your misery.
