Hyderabad Heat & Hidden Havens: A Botanist's Bewilderment
okay, so hyderabad. where do i even begin? i just checked and it's simmering - like, a pot of chai left on the stove too long. thirty-one point something degrees, feels like a slightly less intense thirty. not exactly ideal for identifying rare orchids, let me tell you. i’m a botanist, not a lizard.
I came here chasing rumors of a specific Vanda species, supposedly thriving in some forgotten corner of the city. Turns out, 'forgotten' translates to 'guarded by a very territorial family of stray dogs' in this case. Worth it? Debatable. My ankles are still throbbing.
I spent most of my time wandering through *Charminar, which is… well, it’s a big arch. Lots of people. Lots of dust. I did find a surprisingly good lassi vendor though. Seriously, find him. He’s near the south gate, and his mango lassi is basically sunshine in a glass. I’m not kidding.
I overheard a guy - looked like he’d been nursing a beer since lunchtime - telling his friend, “Don’t go near Laad Bazaar after dark, man. Things get… interesting.” I didn’t press him for details, but I took his advice. I’m not looking for ‘interesting’ after a day of battling humidity and canine security.
Speaking of interesting, the Qutb Shahi Tombs were… unexpectedly peaceful. A little oasis of calm amidst the chaos. The architecture is stunning, obviously, but it was the sheer number of birds flitting around that really got me. I spent a good hour just watching them. It was a nice change from sweating profusely while trying to identify a weed.
Someone told me that the best biryani in the city is at Paradise Restaurant. Apparently, there’s a massive queue, but it’s worth it. I haven’t tried it yet, but it’s on the list. I’m prioritizing plant identification over culinary adventures at this point, but I’ll cave eventually.
My attempts to find the elusive Vanda were… less successful. I did, however, discover a thriving ecosystem of pigeons in a rooftop garden. Not exactly what I was hoping for, but still a win, right? I’m starting to think the rumors were just that - rumors. Or maybe I’m just terrible at finding rare orchids.
If you get bored, Pune and Vijayawada are just a short hop away. I considered a quick trip to Pune, but the thought of more travel just exhausted me. I needed a strong cup of chai and a shady spot to collapse.
I did manage to snag a few interesting specimens for my collection, though. Mostly just weeds, to be honest. But hey, every botanist starts somewhere. I’m posting some photos on my Instagram - @botanicalramblings - if you’re interested.
Here's a quick rundown of what I packed (because apparently, people want to know):
*Field notebook: Absolutely essential. Filled with scribbled notes and questionable sketches.
*Magnifying glass: For those really tiny details.
*Wide-brimmed hat: Sun protection is key. Seriously.
*Insect repellent: The mosquitoes here are relentless.
*Water bottle: Hydration, hydration, hydration.
*Comfortable shoes: You’ll be doing a lot of walking.
*A healthy dose of skepticism: For those rumors about rare orchids.
I’m heading to Golconda Fort* tomorrow. Apparently, there are some interesting plant species growing on the walls. Wish me luck - and send mosquito repellent.
