how touristy is cheongju really? (a vintage picker's take)

okay, so cheongju. i ended up here because a friend of a friend said the vintage scene was…underappreciated. which, honestly, is code for ‘cheap.’ i’m a vintage clothes picker, okay? i chase deals. i don’t chase sunsets. though, the sunsets here are kinda weird. the air feels…thick. like someone brewed a really strong tea and just let it hang around.

Quick Answers About Cheongju

Q: Is Cheongju expensive?
A: Not really. Rent for a decent one-bedroom is around ₩500,000 - ₩800,000 (USD $375 - $600) a month, depending on location. Food is cheap if you eat local, but imported stuff will hit your wallet.

Q: Is it safe?
A: Yeah, it’s pretty safe. I’ve walked around at night without feeling particularly worried. Petty theft exists, like everywhere, but violent crime is rare.

Q: Who should NOT move here?
A: Anyone who needs constant stimulation. Cheongju is…chill. Like, aggressively chill. If you thrive on chaos, Seoul or Busan are better bets.

Q: What’s the job market like?
A: Limited, honestly. Mostly manufacturing and some tourism. Teaching English is an option, but the pay isn’t amazing. Digital nomads will need to bring their own income.

Q: How’s the weather?
A: It’s humid. Really humid. Summers are sticky and winters are cold, with a decent amount of snow. Think four distinct seasons, all trying to happen at once.

okay, so the tourist thing. it’s…complicated. it’s not swarming with people like Busan, but it’s definitely not a hidden gem anymore. a local warned me that the number of domestic tourists has exploded in the last few years, especially around the sake breweries. which, okay, fair. the sake is good.

*Sake & History

The city’s claim to fame is its traditional sake (cheongju, naturally). This has driven a lot of tourism, particularly from older koreans looking for a cultural experience. The historical sites are well-maintained, but often crowded during peak season.

i spent a day wandering around the old city center. it’s cute, i guess. lots of hanoks (traditional korean houses). but also, a lot of souvenir shops selling the same stuff. i overheard a group of tourists complaining about the lack of “instagrammable” spots. which, honestly, is a problem.

there’s a weird tension here. cheongju wants to be a tourist destination, but it also wants to stay…cheongju. it’s like it’s trying to curate its own authenticity, which is a really weird concept.

Vintage Hunting Grounds

Cheongju’s vintage scene is concentrated in a few key areas, primarily around the university and the older residential neighborhoods. Expect to dig, but the prices are significantly lower than in Seoul. Patience is key.

i did find a killer 70s leather jacket for like, ₩30,000 (USD $22). so, you know, it wasn’t a total loss. but i also spent three hours sifting through a pile of moth-eaten sweaters. it’s a trade-off.

the vibe is…different than seoul. seoul is all hustle and bustle. cheongju is more…relaxed. people actually make eye contact. it’s unsettling. i’m used to being ignored.

Local Transportation

Cheongju has a decent bus system, but it can be confusing for non-korean speakers. Taxis are readily available and relatively inexpensive. Walking is also a viable option, especially in the city center.

i took a day trip to Daejeon. it’s only about an hour and a half by train. it’s…fine. more modern, more corporate. i prefer cheongju’s slightly crumbling charm. jeonju is also doable, a bit further, famous for bibimbap.

Cultural Nuances*

Cheongju is a more conservative city than Seoul or Busan. Dress modestly and be respectful of local customs. Learning a few basic korean phrases will go a long way.

honestly, if you’re looking for a place to escape the crowds and experience a more authentic side of korea, cheongju is worth a look. just don’t expect it to be a non-stop party. it’s a place to slow down, drink some sake, and maybe find a really good vintage jacket.

and if you see me digging through a pile of clothes, say hi. i’ll probably be muttering about the price.
