Honolulu Haze: Lost My Keys (and My Sanity)
okay, so, like, i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. i landed in honolulu yesterday and it’s… intense. the humidity is clinging to everything, you know? it’s like a damp, floral hug that’s slowly suffocating me. the pressure’s at 1025, which is… unsettling. feels like 3.59, temp-min 4.95, temp-max 5.02. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.
seriously, the air. it’s thick. like wading through a giant bowl of pineapple. i’m trying to document everything, but my camera keeps fogging up. it’s a whole thing. i’m blaming the *ocean breeze.
I was supposed to meet up with Kai, a local sound guy, but he ghosted. classic. i found a little hole-in-the-wall place for lunch - “Aloha Eats” - and someone told me that the poke is actually good, but only if you order it at 2:17 pm. wild. i went with the spam musubi, because, you know, honolulu.
Spent the afternoon wandering around Waikiki. it’s… a lot. way more tourists than i anticipated. there’s this constant thrum of ukuleles and sunscreen. i ended up at Diamond Head, which was, like, surprisingly strenuous. my calves are screaming. i need a massive smoothie.
I overheard some drunk advice at a beach bar - “don’t trust the guys in the Hawaiian shirts. they’ll try to sell you shell necklaces and bad karaoke.” noted. also, “the best shave ice is at Matsumoto’s, but be prepared to wait.” i’m already mentally preparing for the queue.
Speaking of locals, if you get bored, Oahu is just a short drive away. there’s this family, the Kahunas, who live in a little cottage near the North Shore. they’re super chill, always have fresh mangoes, and their dog, Keanu, is a total sweetheart. they told me about this hidden waterfall, but they wouldn’t give me the exact location. said it was “a secret for those who truly appreciate it.” shady, right?
I’m trying to find a decent coffee shop. the stuff here is… questionable. i need something with actual crema. i’m checking out “Kona Brews” - supposedly they have some decent pour-overs.
My gear list is a disaster. i’ve lost my keys, my charger, and possibly my mind. i’m pretty sure i left my passport in the hotel room. i’m starting to think i should just embrace the chaos.
Here’s what i’m thinking:
Camera (obviously) - but it’s foggy
Notebook (mostly filled with doodles and half-baked ideas)
Sunscreen (essential, duh)
Flip-flops (my footwear of choice)
A healthy dose of anxiety
A very large bottle of water
A questionable map
I found this really cool mural down by the harbor - it was a giant octopus covered in flowers. it was… something.
I’m heading to Pearl Harbor tomorrow. i’ve read a lot about it, but i’m honestly a little nervous. it’s a heavy place, you know? i’m checking out TripAdvisor for some tips on what to expect. https://www.tripadvisor.com/AttractionGroupReviews-g298796-Honolulu_City_Oahu_Island_Hawaii.html
And, you know, i’m trying to find a decent place to eat. Yelp says “Helena’s Hawaiian Food” is the real deal, but it’s always packed. https://www.yelp.com/search?keyword=hawaiian+food&location=Honolulu%2C+Oahu%2C+HI
Seriously, the humidity is a beast. i’m contemplating investing in a dehumidifier. or maybe just moving to Iceland.
I heard that the best sunsets are on the west side of the island. i’m planning to check that out tonight. wish me luck. and maybe send coffee.
Oh, and don’t even think about asking me to take a selfie with a tourist. i’m not dealing with that today.
