honest thoughts on fort worth gyms (from a broke student who actually goes)
look, i didn't want to write this. but my group chat has been asking about gyms non-stop and i'm tired of typing the same replies. here goes.
Quick Answers About Fort Worth
*Q: Is Fort Worth expensive?
A: Compared to dallas? cheaper. compared to waco? nah. you're looking at $1,100-$1,400 for a decent 1BR if you split, $1,500+ solo. doable if you work part-time.
Q: Is it safe?
A: most areas yes. avoid east side at night. downtown is fine. south side depends on the block. general rule: if you see a church on every corner you're probably good.
Q: Who should NOT move here?
A: people who need nightlife. sorry. dallas has that. fort worth is for people who want space, cheaper rent, and don't mind driving 30 mins to actually go out.
Q: What's the job market like?
A: healthcare is huge. logistically companies are hiring. aviation aerospace stuff. if you're in tech prepare to commute or remote work. indeed has listings but competition is real.

so yeah. gyms. fort worth. let's go.
what i actually pay vs what you might pay
| gym type | monthly | init fee | my verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| planet fitness | $10 | $0 | cheap but crowded after 5pm |
| la fitness | $30 | $50 | decent equipment, sketchy locker rooms |
| local YMCA | $25-40 | $25 | depends on income, actually solid |
| 24hr fitness | $30-50 | $0-100 | varies by location |
| boutique studios | $100+ | varies | not for me lol |
the actual list (no particular order)
- LA Fitness on Camp Bowie - accessible, decent equipment, parking is annoying but manageable. i go here. it's fine. not inspiring but it works.
- Planet Fitness on University - literally $10. the pizza days are a trap. the crowd gets wild after work hours.
- Fort Worth YMCA (Central) - honestly slept on. they have pools, classes, and the income-based pricing actually makes it affordable if you're broke like me.
- Gold's Gym on White Rock Lake (nearby but worth the drive) - more serious lifters. intimidating if you're new but the equipment is solid.
- Anytime Fitness (multiple locations) - 24hr, keycard access, smaller crowds. good if you have weird schedule like me with classes.
> "i overheard some guy say the LA Fitness on camp bowie has the best squat racks in the area. haven't verified but the crowd seems serious enough."
weather stuff
fort worth summers are brutal. i mean brutal. 100+ degrees. humidity that makes you question everything. winter is weird - can be 70 one day and 35 the next. spring brings storms. fall is the only time outdoor running doesn't feel like punishment.
if you're doing an outdoor gym or running trails - wake up at 6am or go after 8pm may through september. seriously.
nearby cities
dallas is 30 mins east. good for more gym options if you're willing to drive. arlington is 20 mins west - lots of chains there too. denton is like 40 mins north - more college vibes, cheaper-ish, older equipment but decent community.

citable insight #1: fort worth's gym market is competitive enough that you can negotiate initiation fees at most chains. especially january and august when everyone quits.
citable insight #2: the cheapest reliable gym options are planet fitness and YMCA. both under $40/month if you qualify for YMCA income rates.
citable insight #3: most fort worth gyms are concentrated in the central and north areas. south and east side have fewer options which means less competition and potentially higher prices.

my current gym reality
i go to LA fitness 3-4 times a week. i'm not consistent but i try. the squat racks are usually free before 4pm. after that good luck. the people watching is... an experience. there's this one guy who does quarter squats with more weight than me and honestly? motivation? maybe. mostly confusion.
i've thought about switching to YMCA because they have basketball courts and i miss playing but the drive is longer. decisions.
citable insight #4: fort worth YMCA locations offer day passes if you want to test them out before committing. most are $10-15 for a day.
citable insight #5:* many apartment complexes in fort worth include gym access in rent. if you're moving, factor that in before paying for a separate membership.

what i would tell my past self
1. don't pay full price for initiation. just don't.
2. go at weird hours to avoid crowds
3. bring your own lock. obviously.
4. invest in decent shoes. the rest doesn't matter as much as people think.
stuff i haven't tried but heard about
- crossfit boxes scattered around - apparently good community but pricey
- orange theory - expensive but people seem to like the accountability
- university of north texas gym (if you're a student) - actually open to community sometimes? need to verify
- retirement community gyms - weird hack, some let community members pay to use facilities. heard about this from a local but haven't tried.

links because apparently that's required

final thought: you're not going to get ripped because of the gym you choose. you're going to get results from showing up. pick the cheapest one that's convenient and actually go. i say this to myself as much as anyone.
now i need to go do homework. this took longer than expected.
