Hitching a Ride on the Wind in Donetsk
the air smelled like wet pavement and old metal when i stepped off the bus in donetsk. 18.5°c but it felt like 18.28°c-whatever that means. my phone said humidity was 71%, which explains why my shirt stuck to me like a second skin five minutes in.
i wasn't planning to stay long, just a quick detour between kyiv and kharkiv, but something about the wide, sleepy streets made me linger. i heard a rumor from a guy at the bus station that the best borscht in town hides in a basement cafe nobody bothers to review. he said it's run by a babushka who won't tell you her name unless you finish your bowl. i didn't believe him until i walked past a faded sign reading "Загадка" and caught the smell of dill and pork fat.
if you get bored, makiivka and horlivka are just a short drive away-though someone told me the roads there are more "suggestion than rule." i almost took that advice until i remembered i had exactly 37₴ left and didn't want to gamble it on a shared taxi that might or might not exist.
i checked the weather again-still hovering around 18.5°c-and decided to walk to the donetsk drama theatre. the building looks like it survived a few lifetimes, maybe more. locals say the acoustics are so good you can hear a whisper from the back row, but i didn't stick around for a show. instead, i sat on the steps and watched kids chase pigeons while an old man fed them bread, ignoring the signs that said not to.
overheard gossip at a kiosk: "the best view of the city is from the abandoned ferris wheel near the park, but don't go after dark unless you want to meet the guard dog they forgot to chain up." i didn't test that theory either.
if you're into slow travel, donetsk is like a half-remembered dream: a little faded, a little stubborn, but still breathing. check out the local tourism board's site for current events, or just wander until a stranger offers you tea. that's how i ended up in a kitchen listening to someone's grandfather rant about the price of sugar in 1998.
i just checked and it's still...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.
