Hanoi’s Sticky Fingers and Static Vibes
okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. 1587923… seriously, what even is that number? it just popped into my head. and 1704063856? doesn’t even make sense. but hey, that’s just Hanoi for ya, right? it’s like the city decided to throw a bunch of random bits and pieces together and just… let it happen.
I landed yesterday, and the humidity is intense. Like, you walk out of the airport and you immediately feel like you’re wrapped in a damp towel. The temp is 25.81, feels like 25.9, min 23.9, max 24.94. pressure 1011, humidity 89. it’s… there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. i just checked and it’s still clinging to everything.
I’m staying in the Old Quarter, which is basically a beautiful, chaotic mess of tiny streets crammed with scooters, street food vendors, and people yelling about… well, everything. it’s overwhelming, but in a strangely comforting way. i found this little guesthouse - ‘The Rusty Dragon’ - it’s seriously charming, if you can get past the slightly aggressive gecko in the bathroom. someone told me that the owner, Mr. Ba, used to be a competitive cyclo racer. wild, right?
I spent the afternoon wandering around Hoan Kiem Lake, dodging tourists and trying to capture some decent photos. the lake itself is kinda… grey. not like a dramatic, moody grey, just a slightly dull grey. but the surrounding area is buzzing. there’s this incredible street performance happening - a guy playing a traditional Vietnamese instrument that sounds like a cross between a banjo and a rusty bicycle. it’s mesmerizing.
I grabbed some bun cha from a street vendor - seriously, the best thing i’ve eaten in weeks. it’s pork, noodles, dipping sauce… pure heaven. i heard that the lady who makes it, Mrs. Lien, uses a secret family recipe that’s been passed down for generations. i’m skeptical, but hey, it was delicious.
Speaking of locals, if you get bored, Ha Long Bay is just a short drive away. i’m thinking of heading there tomorrow. i’ve been scrolling through TripAdvisor and Yelp - apparently, there’s this amazing seafood restaurant called ‘The Crab Shack’ that everyone raves about. i’m adding it to my list.
I’m trying to avoid the tourist traps, you know? i’m more interested in the gritty, authentic side of the city. i spent an hour yesterday just watching a group of guys playing chess in a tiny alleyway. it was a surprisingly intense game. i overheard gossip that the oldest player, Mr. Tran, has been playing chess for over 60 years. he’s a legend, apparently.
My gear list is a disaster, honestly. i’ve got my camera, of course - a battered old Canon that’s seen better days. my trusty sketchbook, a half-empty bottle of sunscreen, and a ridiculous amount of socks. i also brought a portable charger, which is currently blinking ominously. i need to find a decent coffee shop to top it up. i’m thinking ‘Cafe Giang’ - they’re famous for their egg coffee.
Seriously, the coffee here is a whole thing. it’s strong, sweet, and often served with a generous dollop of whipped cream. i’m not entirely sure why, but it’s strangely addictive. i heard that the best egg coffee is made with a special technique that involves whisking the egg yolks for a ridiculously long time. i’m going to try to find out more.
I’m trying to keep my schedule loose, just letting the city guide me. i’m not really looking for a ‘perfect’ trip, just a genuine experience. and so far, Hanoi is delivering. it’s chaotic, it’s sweaty, it’s loud, and it’s utterly captivating.
I’m heading out to explore a bit more. wish me luck (and maybe send coffee).
