Garðabær Vibes: What the Locals Won’t Tell You
so here i am in garðabær, iceland, and honestly? it's weird how quiet it gets after 8pm. not creepy quiet-more like everyone just decided to go inside and binge something on netflix. the weather right now is a brisk 12.8°c with a "feels like" of 11.5°c, so yeah, bring a jacket if you're coming. i just checked and it's basically sweater weather with a side of existential dread, hope you like that kind of thing.
first thing i noticed? the houses look like they were designed by someone who really loves gray and hates curtains. but in a charming way. i stayed near the old harbor area, which is perfect if you want to pretend you're in a nordic crime drama. someone told me that the best coffee in town is at kaffitárór íslands, and they weren't wrong-strong enough to wake the elves, apparently.
"don't trust the bus schedule," a local whispered to me in the bakery. "it's more of a suggestion than a promise."
if you get bored, reykjavík and kópavogur are just a short drive away, and both have that "we're close to the capital but not quite there" energy. i spent an afternoon in kópavogur just walking around the harbor, watching people fish like it's 1952.
food-wise, i tried the local fish and chips spot everyone raves about on tripadvisor. decent, but the best part was the guy behind the counter who kept calling me "dude" in icelandic. also, if you're into weird museums, the icelandic museum of rock 'n' roll is a short bus ride away-apparently it's where all the obscure 70s bands went to retire.
"the best hot dog stand is the one with the red roof," i overheard at the bus stop. "but don't ask for ketchup, they'll judge you."
one night i walked down to the shore just to hear the waves. no one else was out. the sky was this flat, moody gray, and i swear i could hear someone's dishwasher running three houses down. that's garðabær for you-peaceful to the point of being suspicious.
would i come back? maybe. it's not the kind of place that screams "adventure," but it's got this slow, stubborn charm that grows on you. like moss. or fermented shark, if you're brave.
if you're planning a trip, check out lonely planet's guide to iceland or browse yelp for local eats. and seriously-bring a jacket.
