Dust & Echoes: Lost in Port Elizabeth
okay, so, i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. 997751 and 1710810520 - don’t ask. it’s just… a thing. the air here in Port Elizabeth is thick, like wet wool, and it’s clinging to everything. the humidity’s sitting at 53%, which is basically a personal sauna. feels like 21.54, temp min 21.91, temp max 21.91, pressure 1017. yeah, that’s the science. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.
I landed yesterday, and honestly, it’s a weird mix. it’s not postcard pretty, not in the way you’d expect. more like… weathered. like a really old guitar that’s seen some battles. the architecture is a mishmash of colonial and something vaguely post-apartheid, all painted in these faded pastel colors. it’s… unsettling, in a good way, i think.
Spent the morning wandering around the city center. found this amazing little record shop - ‘Vinyl Vortex’ - seriously, the guy behind the counter, Silas, he’s a legend. He told me someone told him that the basement is filled with ghost recordings, but he wouldn’t confirm anything. i’m not saying i believe him, but i’m definitely going down there later. check it out: https://www.vinylvortex.co.za/.
Then i stumbled upon this street art scene. it’s not polished, not Instagrammable in the traditional sense. it’s raw, angry, and full of these huge, almost brutalist murals. I saw a piece by a guy called ‘Raze’ - his stuff is dark, deals with displacement and the legacy of the past. It’s heavy, man.
Lunch was at a place called ‘The Rusty Spoon’ - Yelp says it’s “surprisingly good for a hole-in-the-wall.” I’d say it’s solid. The vibe is… chaotic. Like a family dinner that’s been going on for three generations. I had the bobotie - it was decent. I heard that the owner, Mrs. Ndlovu, uses a secret spice blend passed down from her grandmother. Don’t ask me how she keeps it a secret.
Speaking of locals, if you get bored, Cape Town is just a short drive away. There’s this woman, Agnes, who runs a little antique shop near the docks. She’s got this incredible collection of vintage postcards and she’s always got a story to tell. She’s a bit… eccentric, let’s just say.
I’m trying to capture the feeling of this place, you know? It’s not about the shiny tourist traps. It’s about the grit, the stories, the ghosts. I’m setting up my gear - a battered Leica, a sketchbook, a notebook full of scribbles - and just… absorbing it. I’m hoping to get some decent shots, but honestly, the light here is tricky. It’s constantly shifting, playing with the shadows.
My gear list, because why not?
Leica M6 (pray it doesn’t die)
Film - mostly Portra 400
Sketchbook & pencils (for when the film’s done)
Notebook (for capturing the nonsense)
Coffee (obviously)
A healthy dose of cynicism
I’m staying in a little guesthouse called ‘The Sparrow’ - it’s run by a guy named David. He’s a former touring drummer, which explains the slightly chaotic energy of the place. He keeps telling me to “feel the rhythm” of the city. I’m not sure I get it, but I’m willing to try.
Seriously, if you’re looking for a place to just… be, Port Elizabeth might be it. It’s not for everyone. It’s messy, it’s complicated, it’s full of contradictions. But it’s real. And right now, that’s enough for me. Check out some local events on this board: https://www.facebook.com/groups/PortElizabethEvents/
Oh, and one last thing: don’t trust anyone who tells you the beaches are pristine. They’re… interesting. Let’s just leave it at that. Seriously, TripAdvisor says to check out the beaches, but I'm not sure I agree.
