Dust & Echoes in Thessaloniki: A Sleep-Deprived Rant (and Maybe Some Good Finds)
okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm espresso right now. the time zone is a thing, you know? i just landed in thessaloniki, greece, and honestly, it’s… a lot. like, a beautiful, chaotic, sun-baked lot. the air feels thick, almost like honey, and it’s clinging to everything. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the humidity is hitting 82%, and the pressure’s at 1013, which is… unsettling, to be honest. it’s like the city’s holding its breath.
my flight landed at macedonia airport - seriously, the signage is a nightmare. i nearly ended up in sofia. thankfully, i navigated my way to the city center, mostly by asking increasingly frantic locals for directions. they mostly just pointed and smiled, which is a solid strategy, i think.
this place is loud. not in a bad way, just… full. full of scooters, full of shouting vendors, full of people just being. it’s a sensory overload in the best possible way. i’m trying to capture it all with my camera, but it feels like trying to bottle lightning.
i stumbled across this tiny taverna near the white tower - it’s called ‘to paralia’ - and someone told me that the grilled octopus is legendary. i’m cautiously optimistic. i’m also pretty sure i saw a stray cat wearing a tiny hat. greece, am i right?
i spent the afternoon wandering through the ladadika district - it’s basically a maze of narrow streets filled with shops and restaurants. it’s a total rabbit warren, and i got hopelessly lost at least three times. but that’s half the fun, you know? i found this amazing little shop selling hand-painted ceramics. i’m seriously considering buying a dozen bowls.
i overheard some drunk advice at a bar last night - something about avoiding the monastiraki flea market unless you’re prepared to haggle like your life depends on it. also, apparently, the pigeons are territorial. noted.
let’s talk gear, because i’m a mess. my backpack is currently overflowing with snacks, sunscreen, and a rapidly diminishing supply of ibuprofen. here’s the breakdown:
Camera: Canon EOS R6 (obviously) - gotta get those shots.
*Lenses: 24-70mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.8 - the essentials.
*Backpack: Osprey Atmos AG 65 - it’s heavy, but it holds everything.
*Shoes: Tevas - because sandals are life.
*Journal: Moleskine - for documenting the madness.
*Earplugs: Seriously, essential.
*Portable Charger: Anker PowerCore 10000 - don’t be caught without it.
*Phrasebook:* Lonely Planet Greek Phrasebook - my Greek is… rudimentary.
i’m planning on checking out the archaeological museum tomorrow - apparently, it’s got some seriously impressive ancient greek artifacts. and maybe i’ll brave the flea market. maybe.
if you get bored, thessaloniki is just a short drive away to places like volos and nea moudania.
i heard that the best gyros in thessaloniki are found at tzitzikalis - i’m on a mission. i’m also trying to find a decent coffee shop. the espresso here is… an experience. let’s just leave it at that.
i’m seriously considering investing in a beretta 92fs. just kidding… mostly.
seriously though, this city is wild. it’s gritty, it’s beautiful, it’s exhausting, and i wouldn’t trade it for anything.
