Dust & Echoes in Jaipur: A Beat-Up Diary

@Felix Drake3/10/2026blog

okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm chai. 1268601… honestly, i don’t even know what that number means. it just… is. i landed in Jaipur yesterday, and it’s a sensory overload in the best, most terrifying way. the air’s thick with something - spices, dust, maybe a hint of desperation? i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the pressure’s at 1010, feels like a gentle hug from a grumpy giant. humidity’s low, 8, which is a godsend after the flight. ground level is 983, which is… well, it’s Jaipur.

I’m staying in this place - it’s called ‘The Peacock’s Perch’ - and it’s…rustic. let’s go with rustic. the owner, a guy named Rohan, keeps offering me saffron tea and telling me stories about his grandmother, who apparently wrestled crocodiles. i’m not entirely sure i believe him, but it’s entertaining. the wifi is patchy, which is a blessing, honestly. less doomscrolling.

I spent the afternoon wandering around the *Pink City, which is, you know, pink. a lot. it’s a weird, beautiful kind of pink. like a giant bubblegum explosion. i got hopelessly lost in the bazaars, which are basically organized chaos. you gotta haggle, seriously. don’t be polite. be aggressive. i almost bought a ridiculously ornate elephant statue, but my bank account screamed in protest. someone told me that the best textiles are found near Johari Bazaar, but i ended up just buying a ridiculously oversized scarf. it’s fabulous.

I overheard some drunk advice from a guy at a rooftop cafe - he was rambling about a hidden temple and a cursed blue stone. he said, "Don’t trust the monkeys. Seriously. They’re plotting something." i’m taking that with a grain of salt, obviously.

My gear list is a disaster. i’ve got my battered Roland 808, a half-empty bottle of hand sanitizer, and a collection of mismatched socks. essential stuff.

Gear:
Roland 808 (obviously)
Camera (mostly broken)
Sketchbook (mostly filled with doodles)
Portable charger (currently at 12%)
Snacks (mostly trail mix)
A healthy dose of anxiety

I’m trying to capture the feeling of this place - the heat, the noise, the sheer weirdness of it all. it’s not pretty, it’s not polished, but it’s real. i’m aiming for something raw, something honest. i’m hoping to find some inspiration for a new track. maybe something with a heavy, syncopated beat and a touch of melancholy.

I stumbled across a tiny little shop selling antique *mirrors* - they were all covered in intricate carvings. the shopkeeper, an old woman with piercing eyes, said, “These mirrors reflect not just your face, but your soul.” i bought one. it’s probably haunted.

If you get bored, Udaipur is just a short drive away. Apparently, it’s all lakes and palaces. sounds… peaceful. i’m not sure i’m ready for peaceful.

I heard that the best street food is found near Hawa Mahal, but i’m still terrified of trying anything that doesn’t come with a warning label.

Seriously, the heat is brutal. i’m sweating like a pig. i need more chai. and maybe a nap.

I’m trying to find a good place to eat. Yelp says ‘Spice Route’ is decent, but TripAdvisor says it’s ‘overpriced and underwhelming.’ i’m leaning towards the TripAdvisor review.

Jaipur architecture

I’m starting to think i should have brought a better map. or a GPS. or maybe just a really good therapist.

I’m going to try and find a decent coffee shop tomorrow. i need something strong. something that will kickstart my brain. i’m thinking a place with a good espresso machine and a grumpy barista.

I’m also considering visiting the Amber Fort. it’s supposed to be amazing, but i’m worried about the crowds. and the monkeys.

I just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

Okay, I’m officially exhausted. Time for another chai. And maybe a nap. And definitely more chaos.
