Dust & Echoes in Aethelgard: A Beat-Up Diary

@Topiclo Admin3/30/2026blog

okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. the time is… well, it’s complicated. my watch died three days ago, and honestly, i’m not entirely sure i want to know what time it is anymore. i just landed in Aethelgard, and it’s… intense. like, aggressively intense. the air smells like wet stone and something vaguely metallic - probably the old ironworks, which, let’s be real, is everywhere.

I’m tracking the weather - it’s 25.96 degrees feels like, 25.96, temp min 25.96, temp max 25.96, pressure 1008, humidity 42, sea level 1008, grnd level 994. yeah, that’s… consistent. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

Spent the morning wandering around the *Market Square, which is basically a giant, slightly crumbling concrete plaza. It’s buzzing with people - mostly locals, a few tourists who look just as lost as i feel, and a surprising number of pigeons. Seriously, the pigeons are organized. Like, they have little pigeon meetings. I swear.

Someone told me that the best place to grab a bite is ‘The Rusty Cog’ - apparently, they serve this stew made with… something vaguely resembling mushrooms and regret. I’m cautiously optimistic. Yelp says it’s 3.5 stars, which, in Aethelgard, is practically a rave review.

I’m staying in this place called ‘The Broken Lyre’ - it’s a converted warehouse, all exposed brick and mismatched furniture. The owner, Silas, is a retired clockmaker who mostly communicates through grunts and the occasional cryptic comment about the alignment of the planets. He gave me a key and a warning: "Don’t touch the gears." Creepy, right?

Someone overheard me talking about my drum kit and said, ‘You need to feel the rhythm of the city, man. It’s in the cracks.’ I’m not sure what that means, but I’m going to try it.

I’ve been hitting up the local record stores - Aethelgard has a surprisingly vibrant underground music scene. Found a cassette tape of some band called ‘Static Bloom’ that’s… unsettling. In a good way. It’s like listening to a thunderstorm through a broken radio. TripAdvisor says to check out the ‘Echo Chamber’ - supposedly it’s the best place to hear live music.

My gear list is a disaster, as usual. Here’s the breakdown:
Drumsticks (obviously)
Cassette player (essential)
Notebook (for capturing the madness)
Camera (for documenting the chaos - mostly blurry photos)
A questionable amount of coffee
A very worn-out backpack
A healthy dose of skepticism

I heard that the old lighthouse on the cliffs is haunted. Like, really haunted. Someone told me that the keeper went mad after years of staring out at the sea and started talking to the seagulls. I’m not sure I’m brave enough to check it out, but… curiosity is a powerful thing, you know?

If you get bored, Aethelgard is just a short drive away. There’s a whole network of abandoned mines and crumbling factories - perfect for exploring (and probably getting lost). I’m thinking of heading out to Blackwood tomorrow. I heard that the locals there have a strange ritual involving fermented berries and chanting. Sounds… interesting.

I’m trying to capture the vibe here, you know? It’s like a city that’s simultaneously decaying and thriving. There’s a sadness to it, a sense of loss, but also a strange kind of beauty. It’s exhausting, but it’s also… compelling.

I just saw a guy playing a theremin on the corner. Seriously. A theremin. Aethelgard, you’re a trip.

I’m going to find a place to crash for the night. Hopefully, Silas won’t mind if I accidentally touch the gears. Wish me luck.
