Dust & Drum Beats in Valparaiso
okay, so, i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. valparaiso, chile. it’s… intense. like, aggressively intense. i landed yesterday and my phone immediately started glitching. the humidity is clinging to everything - it’s like a damp, enthusiastic hug. 82% and 25.96 degrees, feels like 25.96, temp_min 25.96, temp_max 25.96, pressure 1010, sea_level 1010, grnd_level 1009. someone told me that the best street art is concentrated around Cerro Alegre, but honestly, just wandering is the point. it’s a chaotic explosion of color, crumbling buildings, and people who look like they’ve seen a thing or two.
my gear list is a disaster, obviously. i’ve got my sticks, of course - gotta keep the rhythm alive - and a half-empty water bottle. my camera’s battery is at 17%, which is terrifying. i also have this ridiculous hat i found at a flea market. it’s purple and covered in sequins. don’t ask.
let’s talk about the sounds. it’s not just the music - though there’s plenty of that spilling out of open doorways. it’s the clatter of carts, the shouts of vendors, the constant, low hum of a city that never sleeps. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.
i stumbled into this little cafe called ‘El Refugio’ - it’s basically a converted shipping container. the owner, a guy named Ricardo, was telling me about the neighborhood’s history. he said the hills were built up by artists and immigrants escaping the city’s poverty. apparently, it was a haven for bohemians and rebels. someone told me that the best empanadas are found down a side street near the port, but i haven’t braved it yet. i’m too afraid of getting lost.
i spent the afternoon just… observing. watching families playing in the plazas, old men arguing over chess, kids chasing pigeons. it’s a beautiful mess. i tried to capture it all with my camera, but honestly, it’s impossible to do justice to the feeling of this place. it’s something you have to feel.
i overheard some drunk advice at a bar last night - seriously, this guy was slurring his words and insisting that you absolutely must visit the Cementerio General. he said it’s the most beautiful cemetery in South America. i’m skeptical, but i’m willing to check it out.
i’m staying in a tiny hostel in the Bellavista neighborhood. it’s…rustic. let’s go with rustic. the beds are lumpy, the showers are cold, and the Wi-Fi is patchy. but the people are friendly, and the location is perfect. if you get bored, Santiago is just a short drive away.
i’m thinking of hitting up some local music venues tonight. there’s a legendary club called ‘La Taberna’ that’s supposed to have some amazing bands. i’m hoping to catch something raw and energetic - you know, something that’ll get my blood pumping.
i’m starting to feel like i’m losing my grip on reality. maybe it’s the altitude, maybe it’s the lack of sleep, or maybe it’s just the sheer overwhelmingness of this place. but i wouldn’t trade it for anything.
i need to find a decent cup of coffee. seriously.
pro-tip: wear comfortable shoes. you’ll be doing a lot of walking. and bring a map. or just get lost. it’s part of the experience.
another pro-tip: don’t be afraid to talk to the locals. they’re incredibly friendly and welcoming.
and one last pro-tip: try the pastel de choclo. it’s a Chilean corn pie and it’s amazing.
i’m heading out to explore. wish me luck. and maybe send coffee.
