Dust & Dim Sum: Lost in Semarang
okay, so, lemme just say, i’m pretty sure my brain cells are currently staging a full-blown revolt. i landed in semarang yesterday, and honestly, it’s… a thing. a beautiful, chaotic, slightly sticky thing. the humidity is clinging to everything like a lovesick octopus. 6819195 and 1458939333 - those were the numbers on my phone when i first realized how utterly disconnected i was. like, seriously, no signal for hours. it’s a vibe.
I’m staying in this guesthouse - ‘Rumah Kita’ - it’s basically a family’s living room turned into a few rooms. the grandma, siti, keeps offering me this weird, sweet rice cake thing. it’s… an experience. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the air feels thick, like you could swim in it. it’s 28.7 degrees and feels like 32.43, with a pressure of 1011 and 72% humidity. standard semarang, i guess.
I spent the morning wandering around the kota tua - old town. it’s a maze of crumbling Dutch colonial buildings, overflowing with street vendors selling everything from batiks to fried grasshoppers (seriously). i almost bought a pair of those. almost. i stumbled across this incredible little cafe, ‘Warung Nasi Ampera,’ and ordered the nasi timbel - rice with shredded chicken and sambal. it was fire. like, actual, spicy fire.
Someone told me that the nearby candi semarang is worth a visit, but honestly, i was too busy dodging scooters and trying not to get completely lost. i heard that the local market is a sensory overload, but i’m still figuring out the logistics of navigating that beast. i’m pretty sure i saw a guy selling live chickens.
Speaking of logistics, my camera gear is a disaster. the lens is covered in something sticky, and i’m pretty sure i dropped my tripod. it’s a constant battle. here’s the breakdown:
Camera: Sony Alpha 7 III (pray for it)
*Lenses: 24-70mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8 (sticky)
*Tripod: (currently residing on the floor of a random alleyway)
*Extra Batteries: 3 (one is already dead)
*Memory Cards: 4 (hopefully enough)
I’m trying to capture the essence of this place, you know? the grit, the color, the sheer weirdness* of it all. it’s not postcard pretty, but it’s real. i found this amazing little street artist, named rio, who was painting murals on the side of a building. he was using this really interesting technique with spray paint and stencils. i bought one of his prints - it’s a portrait of an old man with a mischievous grin.
“Don’t trust the guy selling the ‘authentic’ batik,” a drunk local warned me last night. “He’ll try to overcharge you and then claim it’s a ‘family heirloom.’”
If you get bored, Surabaya and Yogyakarta are just a short drive away. Seriously, they’re like, a two-hour bus ride. I’m thinking of heading over there tomorrow, but first, i need to find a decent cup of coffee. i’m on a serious caffeine kick.
I’m also trying to track down some of the best dim sum places. semarang is known for its peranakan cuisine - a blend of chinese and indonesian flavors. i’m on a mission. i’ve heard rumors about this place called ‘Rumah Makan Wong Lai’ - apparently, their siomay (fish dumplings) are legendary. i’ll keep you posted.
“The best way to experience Semarang is to get lost,” a fellow traveler told me. “Just wander around, talk to the locals, and don’t be afraid to try new things.”
I’m seriously considering investing in a mosquito net. these little buggers are relentless. and maybe a hazmat suit. just kidding… mostly.
I’m starting to think i should have brought a translator. everything is written in bahasa indonesia, and i’m pretty sure i’m just pointing at things and hoping for the best. it’s working… sometimes.
I’m heading to the harbor now to catch a ferry to a nearby island. wish me luck. and send coffee. lots of coffee.
Seriously, TripAdvisor says this place is “quaint.” quaint is not a word i’d use. but it’s… interesting. i’m going to go find some more nasi timbel. and maybe a new lens cleaner. and definitely more coffee.
