Detroit: Rust, Rain, and Really Weird Vibes
okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. 4921085… seriously, what even is that number? it just popped into my head. and 1840013891? don’t ask. it’s like a glitch in the matrix, you know? the air here is thick, like wet wool and something vaguely metallic. it’s 996 pressure, humidity’s hovering around 78 - feels like stepping into a sauna that’s been left open for a week. temp’s fluctuating between -0.36 and 1.74, which is…there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. it’s not exactly inviting, but it’s real, you dig?
I landed in Detroit yesterday, and honestly, it’s… a thing. it’s not pretty in the postcard sense, not by a long shot. it’s got this gritty, almost defiant beauty. like a boxer who’s taken a beating but still wants to throw a punch. i’m staying in a converted warehouse downtown - it’s got exposed brick, graffiti art everywhere, and the sound of a thousand different engines humming beneath the floorboards. it’s chaotic, but in a good way.
I spent the morning wandering around the Eastern Market, which is insane. like, seriously, a lot of people. farmers selling everything from heirloom tomatoes to artisanal pickles. someone told me that the best damn pastrami in the city is at Slows, but i’m still scouting. i need to find the real deal. i’m also checking out the Heidelberg Project, which is basically a massive, sprawling outdoor art installation created by Tyree Guyton. it’s… intense. a kaleidoscope of color and found objects. it’s like stepping into a fever dream.
Then, i stumbled upon this dive bar called The Slow Raven. the bartender, a guy named Silas with a handlebar mustache and a permanent squint, gave me this look and said, "You look like you need a drink." He wasn’t wrong. I had a whiskey sour that tasted like regret and resilience. I overheard a group of guys talking about a legendary blues musician who supposedly haunts the basement - something a local warned me about. Apparently, if you listen closely, you can hear his guitar playing. i didn’t hear anything, but i felt a chill.
I’m trying to capture the energy of this place with my camera, but it’s hard. it’s not about pretty pictures. it’s about the feeling. the weight of history, the pulse of the streets, the quiet desperation and the stubborn hope. i’m shooting a lot of street portraits - mostly just people looking like they’ve seen a thing or two.
Speaking of which, if you get bored, Toledo is just a short drive away. It’s got a surprisingly good art museum. I’m also planning a trip to Ann Arbor - supposedly, the college town is a haven for indie music and weirdness. I need to check out the record stores. I’m on the hunt for some vinyl, obviously.
My gear list so far: battered Leica, a sketchbook full of half-finished drawings, a ridiculously oversized coffee thermos, and a healthy dose of skepticism. I’m also trying to avoid eye contact with the pigeons. they’re aggressive. Seriously, don’t look them in the eye.
I found a really cool vintage shop called “Rust Belt Threads” - they had some amazing 70s denim jackets. I’m thinking of getting one. And I need to find a decent taco truck. Seriously, the food scene here is a mixed bag. Some things are amazing, some things are…questionable. I’m sticking to the street food for now.
I’m heading to the RiverWalk tonight. Apparently, it’s a good spot to watch the sunset. I’m hoping for something dramatic. I’m also trying to track down some more local legends. Someone told me about a hidden speakeasy in the theater district - it’s only open on Tuesdays. I’ll see if I can find it.
Seriously, this place is wild. It’s not for everyone. But if you’re looking for something real, something raw, something that will challenge you and maybe even break your heart, then Detroit might just be the place for you.
