Denver's Thin Air and Tin Wallet: A Broke Student's Survival Guide
just got back from denver and my wallet’s still breathing, barely. this city’s got a wild energy, like it’s always trying to outrun its own altitude.
the moment i landed, my hair stood up like i’d stuck my finger in a socket. i just checked the weather and it’s that sharp 10-degree air that bites your knuckles even with gloves on, hope you brought insulation. the *dry cold here’s no joke-it’s like walking into a freezer with the door left open. locals call it ‘fresh air’ but i call it freezing fingers tax. if you get stir-crazy, boulder’s a quick shot north for mountain views that don’t cost a dime. or colorado springs south for those red rocks that look like they’re photoshopped.
“skip the art museum’s $25 entry-go to the free street murals in riNo instead. the ones under the highway are better anyway.”
so i ditched the denver art museum’s paywall and wandered the riNo district instead. those warehouse-turned-street-art spots? pure gold. and someone told me the botanic gardens have free evenings sometimes? i caught one by accident-sitting in the glass house watching the sunset over succulents for $0. score.
“that taco truck near the university? $1 tacos on tuesdays. cash only. bring a friend so you don’t look weird eating 10 alone.”
jesus was they right. el taco de whatever is my new religion. those street tacos hit different when you’ve been surviving on ramen. also, the central market’s $0.99 coffee? my bloodstream’s new best friend.
for housing? i crashed in a hostel for $20/night with a kitchen. made pasta that tasted like cardboard but cost $3. the union station area’s great for people-watching if you don’t mind buying $8 coffee to justify sitting there. oh and the black american west museum*? $7 and 100x more interesting than the overpriced history stuff. check out denver’s free events calendar for hidden gems. cheap eats on yelp is your bible. and tripadvisor’s free activities won’t steer you wrong. moral of the story? denver doesn’t need your money to be amazing-just bring a hoodie and an empty stomach.
