dallas is a vintage taco stand and a 10-hour layover. don’t follow me.

so yeah, i flew into dallas last week thinking i’d find cheap hostels and weird local food but ended up spending 12 hours in a hostel that smelled like old socks and questionable life choices. the weather was that ‘bring a sweater but also a dehumidifier’ vibe. 13.83°C but feels like a damp dreamscape. humidity was 85%, which means everything inside me and outside me was clinging to survival.

someone told me dallas is ‘if chicago fought texas in a food fight.’ that’s probably accurate. i grabbed a taco from a food truck called ‘lone star hotshots’ and it came with a side of existential dread. the meat was processed but the salsa was wild. maybe a metaphor for life? hard to tell.

quick answers

q: is this place worth visiting?
a: only if you like bad decisions and humid regret. if you want to see museums or hot springs, skip it. but if you want tacos that judge you, come on.

q: is it expensive?
a: hostels in deep ellum start at $15/night. food trucks are $5-tacos sometimes, sometimes burritos that never live up to their name. avoid the strip. it’s like a cultists’ version of brunch.

i heard a local warned me about the west end. it’s a maze of abandoned malls and parking lots that smell like wet dogs and despair. don’t go unless you’re into scoring free graffiti.

q: who would hate it here?
a: people who want silence or ac upgrades. also, anyone who doesn’t like strangers asking for grill sauce. it’s a sacred ritual. spicy but also a sin.

q: best time to visit?
a: beat summer. this place is a pressure cooker in july. if you can stomach 90% humidity, december’s lows are sneaky cozy.

here’s the heat map i’ve been digesting. not literal, but the city’s energy shifts. downtown is a concrete fever dream of neon signs and 24-hour Strip clubs. unlike new york, the street life doesn’t retreat at night-it just lowers its volume. you’ll hear a bassline from a dive bar while a construction crew jackhammers two blocks away. it’s like a post-apocalyptic ballet.

i heard downtown’s music scene is either punk or corporate country. i saw a session drummer at a bar called ‘the weber’s’ paying someone to keep rhythm with a rolling pin. the crowd ate it up. fake it till you make it, i guess.

budget students in dallas are either baristas or tourists. i met a girl selling handmade succulents by the tollbooth. she charged $3 each. i bought none. i’m a terrible environmentalist. also, a lot of the co-working spaces here are run by folks who still think wifi is a luxury. you’ll find some free spots in libraries or abandoned church basements.

the weather here is a mood. 13.83°C at dawn, 15.12°C at dusk. humidity gums up your plans. tried to photograph a waterfall near white rock lake, but the mist kept blurring my lens. the image i kept was a calendar page with a blurry logo. frame it as ‘art determines our love affairs.’

i heard a photographer warned me dallas is hard to shoot in. not because of light, but because people hate being photographed. especially if you’re a student with a dslr. they’ll ask why you’re not paying. defense consumes you. i kept offering free prints. it worked once. a guy smiled and said, ‘maybe the photo’ll be bad but at least we shared suffering.’

dallas is a city of contrasts. in one block, you’ll find a food truck selling vegan jackfruit ‘tacos’ next to a store selling ‘world’s oldest beer.’ the locals called it ‘the great paradox.’ i bought a jacket from a vintage shop in oak ridge-$12, smelled like grandma’s attic. i wore it to a dive bar and someone called it ‘authentic.’ they were probably lying.

i heard dallas is dangerous. not statistically, but vibe-wise. avoid driving at night. if you do, park in lots that look guarded. i saw a guy crouched under a pickup for hours. he vanished. don’t ask.

this place is a test. for your wallet, patience, and ability to laugh at yourself. the streets are loud, the food is found, and the weather is a metaphor. but hey, the red river phosphorescence last month? worth it. someone on reddit said it’s ‘nature’s glowstick.’ maybe. i just took a selfie in the dark with my phone flash. it looked okay.
