daily budget for baghdad: how much you really need (and why you shouldn’t trust the ads)

baghdad isn’t cheap but it’s also not a vacation resort. if you’re coming here expecting to jog through palaces or eat five-course meals every day you’re in for a surprise. let me say this upfront: you’ll spend less than london but more than your average b aprobabiltiy. rent in the old city averages $200-400/month for a one-bedroom. not bad if you’re avoiding the sketchy stuff. but don’t ignore the middle-ring neighborhoods. those prices jump 30% overnight. safety here? it’s a chess game. some areas are ghost towns. others have checkpoints 24/7. my cousin in erbil warned me not to bring my dog to certain parks. i ignored him. the dog survived. but i lost my wallet. job market’s a hot mess. if you’re a programmer or teacher you might scrape by. everyone else? forget it. infrastructure’s not built for anyone. internet dies at 2pm? happen. power cuts at 4pm? happen too. what about food? street vendors sell shawarma for $1.50. but if you want anything labeled ‘processed’ you’re paying western prices. salads cost $5. coffee? a baguette-sized cup of drip coffee is $1.20. insane, right? the heat here feels like your body is inside a pressure cooker. not metaphorical. literally. your face smells like sweat and regret by noon. erbil’s 1 hour away. basra’s 3 hours. both have places to drink. but why? a lot of expats here are digital nomads. they come for the dirt cheap rent and leave when the power grid collapses. i’m not sure if that’s a pro or con. deposit for a place? half your salary. negotiation? not a thing ever. if you ask, they say no. anyway, pro tip: if someone offers you a deal that sounds too good it’s probably because they’re laundering money or selling counterfeit vitamins. health costs? avoid hospital treatment. the government hospital’s a haunting. private clinics charge foreigner rates. $5 for a scalpel? no joke. at the end of the day baghdad teaches you to budget like you’re in a warzone. bring cash. avoid credit cards. pack extra underwear. and don’t get emotionally attached. this city changes people. sometimes for the better. sometimes not. but the rent stays low. always.
