Chasing the Vibe in Santa Marta, Colombia

santa marta hit me like a wave i didn't see coming. not the usual tourist trap, not the sleepy beach town either-just this weird, perfect in-between. i landed with zero expectations and left with sand in my shoes, a sunburn, and a new obsession with caribbean chaos.

i just checked and it's 27.1°c there right now, feels like 30.27 with humidity at 83%, so yeah-if you're not into sweating through your shirt by noon, maybe reconsider. but honestly, the heat just makes everything slower, dreamier, like the whole city's moving underwater.

first thing i noticed? the colors. buildings painted like someone raided a crayon box, murals everywhere, and street vendors yelling over reggaeton that rattles your chest. i stayed in a hostel near the mercado público-cheap, loud, and exactly what i needed. someone told me that the mercado's ceviche is the best in town, but also that you shouldn't eat it after 2pm unless you want to gamble with your stomach. i took the risk. worth it.

if you get bored, cartagena and tayrona national park are just a short drive away, but honestly? i barely left santa marta. i was too busy wandering the malecón at sunset, drinking overly sweet limonada de coco, and trying to keep up with locals who dance like they're half-snake, half-human.

i heard that the best coffee isn't in the tourist cafes but in some hole-in-the-wall called *café del centro-tiny, no wifi, just strong brews and old men playing dominoes. i went. it was perfect.

one night, a guy at the hostel convinced me to join a
rumba* downtown. no idea what i was doing, but i faked it till i didn't care anymore. someone spilled a drink on my shoes and i just laughed. that's the vibe here-messy, loud, alive.

would i go back? absolutely. santa marta doesn't try to impress you. it just is. and somehow, that's more impressive than any polished resort town could ever be.
