Chasing Shadows in a Forgotten Town

the first thing i noticed was the silence. like someone had turned down the volume on the whole world. i rolled into this place after a long drive through nothing but wheat fields and broken fences. my phone said it was 40.44°F but it felt colder, like the air was holding its breath. the humidity was 12%, which basically means your skin turns into sandpaper the second you step outside. i just checked and it's...bone-dry right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

i heard someone in a gas station say this town used to be a mining hub back in the 1800s. now it's just a grid of empty streets and sun-bleached signs. i parked near what looked like an old theater, all cracked brick and vines. someone told me that the ghost of a projectionist still walks the aisles at night, flipping invisible switches. i didn't stick around to confirm.

if you get bored, *billings and bozeman are just a short drive away, though honestly i kinda liked being nowhere. i found a diner that smelled like bacon grease and burnt coffee. the waitress called me "hon" and warned me the pie was "government issue." i ate it anyway. it was fine.

overheard a local at the counter say the town's water tower was painted by a guy who went mad trying to capture the sunset. i looked up and sure enough, it was a swirl of orange and black that looked like a migraine. i snapped a pic for the 'gram, but it didn't do it justice.

i spent the afternoon wandering past boarded-up shops and a library that looked like it hadn't seen a visitor since the 90s. the only sound was the wind rattling through the screen doors. i kept expecting tumbleweeds to roll by like in an old western. they never did, but i did see a cat with one eye watching me from a windowsill.

the weather app said the pressure was 1003 and the ground level was 999, which sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie. i checked the map and realized i was closer to the middle of nowhere than i thought. but that's kinda the point, right? sometimes you need to get lost to find something worth writing about.

i ended the day at a motel that smelled like cigarettes and lemon air freshener. the neon sign flickered like it was trying to decide whether to stay on or give up. i didn't sleep much, but i did dream about the projectionist and his invisible film reels.

if you're into weird, quiet places with more ghosts than people, this town's got your name on it. just bring a jacket. and maybe a flashlight.
