chasing light through são paulo’s alleys
i woke up with the city humming through my window, the kind of lazy morning that makes you want to chase shadows and light. i’m a freelance photographer, so my gear is always half packed, half scattered across the floor. today i threw my sony a7riii, a battered lens, and a notebook full of scribbles into my bag and headed out to *beco do batman where the walls talk in spray.
the weather? i glanced at my phone and it said warm and sticky, feels like a damp towel wrapped around your shoulders, hope you like that kind of thing. the humidity clung to my shirt as i walked down avenida paulista, dodging street vendors and the occasional skateboarder yelling tricks.
i stopped at a tiny café tucked behind a bookstore, something a local warned me about: “they serve the best cappuccino if you can survive the line.” i heard that the barista doubles as a poet, scribbling verses on napkins while pulling shots. i ordered, watched the milk swirl, and snapped a few frames of the steam rising like tiny ghosts. check out this spot on tripadvisor
later i wandered into mercado municipal, the stained glass ceiling throwing colored light onto piles of fruit, cheese, and cured meats. someone told me that the mortadella here is legendary, and i swear i could taste the history in each slice. i bought a wedge of queijo minas and a pastel, balancing them on my knee as i sat on a bench watching old men play dominoes.

i lifted my camera to capture the contrast - the intense reds of the pomegranates against the muted tiles. i tried to keep my shutter quiet, but a kid laughed and pointed, making me blush.
as the sun began to dip, i made my way to ibirapuera park*. the paths were lined with joggers, families, and a couple practicing yoga near the lake. if you need a change of scenery, the nearby towns of campinas and santos are just a short drive away, each offering a different flavor of paulista life.

i ended the day on a rooftop bar overlooking the skyline, the lights flickering like fireflies caught in a jar.
overall, são paulo feels like a endless roll of film - overexposed in spots, underexposed in others, but always worth developing.
