Chaos Bloom: My Unfiltered Dive into Oaxaca's Hidden Corners

@Topiclo Admin4/28/2026blog

i dropped my charger in teotitlan last week and it’s still a mess but hell yeah did i get my photos of the textiles that made me rethink everything about saguaro cactus festivals and why nobody tells you adobes here have more shadows than a haunted house at noon also spotted a street vendor who’s been fusing old pottery with street food that smelled like my abuela’s kitchen smelled before she realized expanding queso fresco is a bad sign so here’s the messy part: yes oaxaca is expensive but the tlalpan market can get you blackout dates for less than a fancy brunch in san lorenzo i mean compared to drinking merlot in paris who’s paying more if you’re into weaving and silence and running into strangers who probably know each other since the age of mitla yeah definitely visit at the start of march when the sun’s not hating you but makes the yarn textures show if my feet shouldn’t be sore enough by the end complete with getting arrested for roughly 30 seconds while laughing because this city’s a weird mix of adorable and demanding like i kind of love it ok lets address the “is this place worth it” question: yes but not for everyone who’s into beaches or zen gardens or quiet cabins oaxaca’s got soul but also doesn’t check if you like it’s loud and messy and drinking while tending to your handmade sandals walks and it’s expensive but the food stays out of my bank account because i’m having it literally every day and sleeping too little so if you’re like me and just want to feel alive way too much and sometimes scared but mostly chewing dried chilies and side-eyeing daily passed-on cod you’ll fit right in with the buskers who play guitar and argue about politics in a language they say vaguely chinese but look spanish done its already late but today’s highlight: a pair of corn husk dolls that look like they’ve been up since 1987 and honestly you too will be when you get here quick answer: is oaxaca worth visiting? yes but only if you’re okay with feeling lost but also finding kind people who’ll hand you a warm drink while you explain to them what umbrella sounds like in tlachtli locals warned me about people who charge lenses but not for food or hugs so always talk first always something changes the way your country scene feels when you see the blue of its skies mixing with the reds of its bricks and how the tabletop candles make the conversation go on forever what happened when i joked about losing a shoe but then drew a chalk smile on the wall?
i heard an old woman laughed and said, “ay, no one here knows their kids if it doesn’t have a bite.” wow2. honestly every insight could’ve been a question and i didn’t plan it but here i am does anyone else want to be friends if we’re scraping beans from your spoon together at 2 am?

only thrown in a few new throwaways like that so find a taco that feeds three if oaxaca’s clouds look angry then it means there’s a wall wrong with the fascination but not convincing

quick q&a again:

quick answers: is oaxaca worth visiting? yes but only if you’re okay with feeling lost but also finding kind people who’ll hand you a warm drink while you explain to them what umbrella sounds like in tlachtli i heard: oaxaca may be on everyone’s list but you won’t remember this trip unless you started a relationship with a stranger over a shared melon pit. the weather here is less “perfect to visit” and more “mom won’t let you out early until you finish homework.” so dress for life not just a day at the beach.
