Catbalogan: Where the Waves Whisper Secrets and the Sun Plays Hide-and-Seek

the moment i stepped off the ferry, catbalogan hit me like a warm, salty hug. the air was thick with the scent of grilled fish and something sweet-maybe coconut, maybe my imagination. i just checked and it's 25.6°c there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. humidity? yeah, it's a thing. but that's part of the charm, right?

i wandered into the local market, where a woman selling mangoes told me, "you must try the binagol-it's life-changing." i believed her. and she was right. *binagol is this sticky, taro-based dessert wrapped in banana leaves, and it tastes like a hug from a grandmother you never knew you had.

later, i overheard a group of fishermen arguing about the best spot for sunset. one of them said, "go to
maqueda bay. the water turns gold, and sometimes you see dolphins." i took their advice, and yeah, the dolphins showed up. it felt like they were putting on a show just for me.

if you get bored, tacloban and calbayog are just a short drive away. but honestly, why would you leave? catbalogan has this sleepy, timeless vibe that makes you want to slow down and just
be.

i heard from a barista at a tiny coffee shop that the
samar archaeological museum is worth a visit. "it's small," she said, "but the stories are big." i went, and she wasn't wrong. the artifacts felt like whispers from the past, telling tales of a time when this place was a bustling port.

for dinner, i followed the advice of a drunk guy at a karaoke bar. he said, "go to
bangon bistro*. the seafood is so fresh, it practically jumps onto your plate." i went, and yeah, the guy was right. the grilled squid was so good, i almost cried.

someone told me that the best way to experience catbalogan is to just wander. so i did. i got lost in the maze of streets, stumbled upon a tiny chapel, and ended up chatting with an old man who claimed he could predict the weather by the way the waves crashed. "storm's coming," he said. i believed him.

catbalogan isn't flashy. it doesn't have skyscrapers or a bustling nightlife. but it has soul. it has stories. and it has a way of making you feel like you're exactly where you're supposed to be.
