broke and freezing: my frostville misadventures
woke up in frostville this morning and the first thing i noticed was the cold. seriously, my toes were numb even under three blankets. the hostel heater was on the fritz, so i decided to brave the streets in search of coffee and warmth. i just checked the temp and it's holding steady at four-point-six-seven, feels like three-point-four, brrr, hope you packed thermals.
this is the map of frostville, which i kept on my phone at all times because i was getting lost every five minutes. speaking of getting lost, i hopped on the 300797 bus to get downtown, which was a mistake because it took forever and cost me two euros. two euros! i could've bought a whole loaf of bread for that.
the city was kinda grey, but then i found this tiny cafe that sold coffee for one euro. score! the barista was this old dude who didn't speak much english, but he handed me a croissant that was still warm. i sat there for hours, sipping and writing in my journal. the wifi was free but slow, so i didn't get much done, but it was cozy.
then i heard about this place called 1792772640, which is actually a code for a hidden entrance to an underground market. i had to ask around for a bit, and a local bartender finally told me it's behind the bookstore on main street. you knock twice, wait, then knock again. i did that and a little door opened, and i was in this whole other world. vintage clothes, handmade jewelry, and even a guy selling his grandma's old recipes. i bought a pair of wool socks for three euros, which was a steal.
someone told me that the best breakfast spot in frostville is this place called 'The Frozen Spoon', but also warned me that the wait can be brutal on weekends. so i went there on a tuesday and it was perfect. i got the pancakes, which were huge and cheap. they only take cash, though, so make sure you hit an atm first.
if you run out of things to do, snowfield and chillton are just a quick drive away. i didn't have a car, but the public bus goes there and it's only two euros each way. snowfield has this cool castle, and chillton has a lake that was frozen over when i was there. i almost slipped and broke my neck, but it was worth it for the photos.
for more info, i checked out the frostville forum at frostvilleforum.com, and they had a whole thread on budget travel tips. also, the yelp reviews for the frozen spoon are pretty mixed, but you can see for yourself at yelp.com. and if you want to plan a day trip, tripadvisor has a section on frostville that's actually super helpful.
overall, frostville is a great spot if you're broke and don't mind the cold. i spent about thirty euros a day, including hostel, food, and transport. not bad, right? now i'm going to go back to my hostel and try to thaw out. peace out.
