Bristol: Rain, Rumors, and Really Weird Vibes
okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. i landed in bristol yesterday, and honestly, it’s… a thing. a damp, grey, slightly unsettling thing. the air feels thick, like someone’s been brewing tea for a week and hasn’t opened a window. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the pressure is 1013, humidity’s hovering around 88 - feels like stepping into a perpetually damp wool sweater. it’s not bad, just… persistent.
I’m staying in this tiny place near the Harbourside - it’s basically a converted warehouse, all exposed brick and slightly sticky floors. the landlord, a guy named Silas, keeps leaving cryptic notes about ‘the echoes’ and ‘watching the tide.’ honestly, i’m starting to think he’s a retired spy or something. he also has a collection of vintage teapots. a lot of vintage teapots.
I spent the afternoon wandering around Clifton, which is… intense. all those Victorian terraces, looking like they’re about to crumble. i stumbled across this amazing little record shop, ‘Vinyl Vortex,’ and nearly blew my budget on a first pressing of some obscure krautrock band. almost. i needed to grab some supplies, so i popped into a place called ‘The Pig & Fork’ - someone told me that their Sunday roast is legendary, but also that the gravy is aggressively salty. i’m going to risk it.
Speaking of risks, i overheard a conversation in a pub - a very loud conversation - about a series of disappearances near the docks. apparently, there’s a local legend about a ‘shadow man’ who lures people into the water. it’s probably just drunken ramblings, but bristol has a way of making you question everything. i checked Yelp and found a place called ‘The Old Tech,’ apparently a great spot for craft beers and a slightly unsettling atmosphere. i’m adding it to the list.
Here’s the gear list, because i’m a compulsive organizer, even when i’m sleep-deprived:
Rain jacket (obviously)
Waterproof boots (seriously, don’t skip this)
Camera (duh)
Notebook and pen (for documenting the weirdness)
Portable charger (because my phone dies faster than a houseplant)
Emergency chocolate (essential)
A healthy dose of skepticism
I’m heading to Stokes Croft tomorrow - it’s a bit of a hipster haven, apparently. lots of street art and independent shops. i heard that there’s a really cool mural by a local artist called ‘Pixel Flux’ - i’m hoping to catch it. if you’re looking for something to do, check out this local board: https://www.bristol.gov.uk/things-to-do
And if you’re ever in the area, avoid the ‘Black Swan’ pub after midnight. i heard that… well, let’s just say it involves a lot of questionable karaoke and a surprisingly aggressive pigeon.
If you get bored, Bath is just a short drive away. or Glastonbury, if you’re feeling particularly adventurous. Silas mentioned something about a ‘resonance’ in the old abbey, but i’m not sure i want to investigate that.
I’m going to try and get some sleep, but i have a feeling bristol isn’t done with me yet. it’s got a hold of me, i think. a damp, grey, slightly unsettling hold.
Here’s a little snippet from a local I met at the market:
“Don’t trust the reflections. They show you what you want to see, not what’s really there. And always, always* watch the tide.”
Seriously, watch the tide.
