Berlin Bleeds: A Soundtrack of Rain and Regret
okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. 535286… that’s the timestamp on my phone, i guess? 1643283176. doesn’t mean anything, really. just a random number staring back at me from a cracked screen. i landed in berlin yesterday, and honestly, it feels like stepping into a slightly bruised, incredibly cool film. the air’s thick - like, you can almost taste the damp concrete and the ghosts of a thousand debates. it’s 992 meters above sea level, which is… unsettling, to be honest. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.
my hotel? let’s just say it’s ‘rustic.’ think peeling wallpaper, a shower that threatens to flood the bathroom, and a view of a brick wall. it’s charming, in a profoundly depressing way. i’m trying to channel my inner Kerouac, but mostly i’m just battling a serious case of jet lag and a desperate need for a decent pastry. i found a place near the *Hackescher Markt that might have something edible - fingers crossed.
i spent the afternoon wandering around, mostly just getting lost. which, let’s be real, is my specialty. i stumbled upon this incredible street art scene - seriously, the murals are insane. like, full-blown, emotionally-charged, thought-provoking insane. someone told me that the best way to see it is to just wander aimlessly and let the city guide you. i’m taking that advice to heart. i’m also pretty sure i saw a guy dressed as a giant banana arguing with a pigeon. berlin, you’re wild.
found a little bar called ‘Zum Schwarzen Kameel’ - it’s tiny, crammed with locals, and the beer is… well, it’s beer. good beer. i overheard a group of guys talking about a legendary techno club called ‘Tresor’ - apparently, it’s a pilgrimage for anyone who appreciates a good, sweaty, bass-heavy experience. i’m not sure i’m ready for that level of intensity yet, but i’m definitely adding it to the list. i heard that the bouncer is notoriously grumpy, though. a local warned me about that.
i’m trying to capture the vibe, you know? the feeling of being surrounded by so much history, so much creativity, so much… melancholy. it’s a strange mix. it’s like the city is simultaneously celebrating its past and mourning its future. i’m feeling it. it’s a heavy feeling. i need to find a way to process it. maybe more coffee. or maybe a long walk along the Spree River.
gear list (because someone has to organize things, right?):
worn-out sneakers (essential)
a notebook full of half-formed ideas
a perpetually damp camera
a ridiculously oversized backpack
a healthy dose of cynicism
a portable charger (because i always forget to charge my phone)
a map that’s hopelessly outdated
* a playlist of obscure german post-punk bands (researching, obviously)
if you get bored, Potsdam is just a short drive away. i’m thinking of checking out Sanssouci Palace tomorrow. maybe i’ll find a ghost. or at least a really good view.

seriously, the humidity is brutal. 80%. it’s clinging to everything. i’m pretty sure i’m sweating through my clothes. but hey, at least it’s atmospheric, right?
