bacabal beats and leaks

i rolled into bacabal with my camera bag half-filled with expired film and a mind full of half-remembered lyrics from a busker i met last week. the air hung heavy, the kind of warmth that makes your shirt stick to your back before you even step out of the hostel. i just checked and it's a lazy, soupy heat that clings like old sweat, hope you enjoy that sort of thing.

i wandered toward the mercado central, chatting with a vendor who swore his sister's boyfriend once saw a ghostly figure drifting between the stalls at midnight.

"i heard that if you leave a offer of cachaça near the old well, the spirit’ll whisper the next big gig for any drummer passing through,"

he laughed, wiping his hands on his apron.

later i caught a ride on a mototaxi to the outskirts, where the streets turn into a patchwork of red dirt and swaying palms. if you ever need a break, the nearby towns of santa iná and são luís are just a short hop away, perfect for a quick espresso or a dip in the river.

yelp has a few spots tagged as "hidden gem" for grilled fish, though i took that with a pinch of salt after a local warned me, "someone told me that the place with the neon sign serves fish that’s been sitting out since lunch."

i ended the day perched on a rusted ladder overlooking the river, shooting silhouettes as the sun dipped, the light turning the water into molten copper. my fingers were sore, my back stiff, but the click of the shutter felt like a heartbeat syncing with the town’s lazy pulse.

tripadvisor lists the cathedral as a must-see, but the real treasure, in my opinion, is the way the light fractures through the broken shutters of the abandoned cinema on rua das flores.
