Austin, Texas: Static & Sweat

okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on caffeine and regret. 4715292 and 1840020703… honestly, those numbers just kinda swam into my head while i was staring at a *cactus this morning. it was… unsettling. the air pressure is 1025, humidity’s hovering around 53, and it feels like 2.86 outside. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. it’s like a thick, grey blanket, you know? not unpleasant, just…present.

Austin. it’s a weird one. like, aggressively weird. i landed yesterday and immediately felt like i’d stumbled onto a particularly enthusiastic indie film shoot. everyone’s wearing ironic band tees, there’s live music bleeding out of every doorway, and the food trucks are… intense. i’m talking brisket the size of your head and vegan tacos that somehow manage to be both incredibly flavorful and slightly alarming.

I’m staying in a tiny Airbnb in South Congress - seriously, it’s basically a glorified closet - but the location is killer. I’m a few blocks from the
Congress Avenue Bridge and can practically smell the river. I spent the afternoon wandering around, dodging scooters and trying to decipher the local slang. ‘Lit’ apparently means ‘okay,’ which is… helpful.

I stumbled into this place called ‘The Skylark’ - a dive bar with a surprisingly decent selection of craft beers. Someone told me that the bartender, Silas, used to be a competitive eater. I’m not kidding. He claimed to have consumed 47 hot dogs in under an hour. I took that with a grain of salt, obviously. I heard that the live music starts around 9, and it’s usually a mix of blues, country, and something vaguely psychedelic.

Gear list, because i always need a gear list:
My battered Roland 808 - essential.
A ridiculously oversized backpack (seriously, it’s a burden).
A portable charger (because i’m perpetually out of juice).
A notebook and pen (for capturing the chaos, obviously).
A healthy dose of skepticism.

I checked Yelp and TripAdvisor - the reviews are… mixed. Mostly positive, but there’s a recurring theme of ‘overpriced everything.’ Apparently, even a cup of coffee costs more than my rent back home. I’m thinking of hitting up Franklin Barbecue tomorrow. Someone told me it’s worth the wait, but i’m bracing myself for a potential three-hour queue. I found a local board with some recommendations: https://www.austintexas.gov/things-to-do

Speaking of locals, if you get bored, San Antonio are just a short drive away. I met a guy named Leo at the pool - he’s a tattoo artist who specializes in geometric designs. He said he’s been tattooing in Austin for about 15 years and has seen it all. He also warned me about the thunderstorms that roll in around 4 pm. Apparently, they’re legendary.

I’m trying to capture the vibe of this place - the energy, the weirdness, the sheer volume of things happening at once. It’s overwhelming, but in a strangely exhilarating way. I’m thinking of doing a series of photos - black and white shots focusing on the textures and details. I’m also planning on checking out some of the street art - Austin has a thriving scene. I saw some incredible murals near the *South Lamar Boulevard* area.

I’m heading out to explore Barton Springs Pool now. It’s supposed to be naturally spring-fed and incredibly cold. I’m not sure i’m ready for that, but i’m going to do it anyway. I heard that the water is incredibly murky, but that’s part of the charm, apparently. I’m also going to try to find some authentic Tex-Mex - i’m craving something spicy and cheesy. I found a promising place on Yelp: https://www.yelp.com/

Seriously, the humidity is a beast. It’s clinging to everything. I’m starting to feel like a damp sponge. I need to find a dry place to recharge. Maybe a coffee shop. I’m on the hunt for the perfect cup of joe - something dark, rich, and slightly bitter. I heard that Houndstooth is a good bet.

Okay, that’s enough rambling for now. My brain is starting to feel like scrambled eggs. I’m going to go find a taco and try to make sense of it all. Austin, you’re a trip.
