Austin, Texas: Numbers, Sunshine, and Slightly Existential Food

okay, so i'm still processing. the numbers came first, you know? 1164064 and 1586391761 - felt like a cosmic joke. then the weather check: temp 23.71, feels like 22.82. a lovely, slightly humid afternoon. pressure 1008, humidity 26%, sea level 1008, ground level 991. seriously, it felt… right. a little like being inside a really nice, slightly dusty vintage shop.

i ended up wandering around South Congress (SoCo) - that’s where i’m based for the next week. it’s a glorious mess, a collision of funky shops, live music spilling out of doorways, and people who look like they’ve just stepped out of a Wes Anderson film. i'm trying to soak it all in, but honestly, my brain feels like a slightly overstuffed backpack.

my neighbors? they’re a strange mix. mostly artists, musicians, people who seem to have embraced the chaos. if you get bored, Houston is just a short drive away. and San Antonio… well, that’s a whole different vibe.

i’ve been trying to eat my way through Austin, and let me tell you, it’s a food adventure. i heard that Franklin Barbecue is legendary, but someone told me it’s basically a religious experience and you need to be there before dawn. i chickened out. (though, i did manage to snag some amazing tacos from a place called Veracruz All Natural. seriously, you need to.)

Someone told me that the best breakfast is found at a little cafe near Zilker Park. Apparently, their burnt honey pancakes are life-changing. Don't ask me how I know - I heard it from a street performer who looked like he’d seen things.

i'm also trying to get my bearings on the local music scene. it’s insane. every street corner has some kind of band playing. i’m not exactly a music expert, but i’m enjoying just letting the sounds wash over me. i’m planning on checking out the Continental Club - it’s a legendary venue. they’ve got some incredible history.

i stumbled across a vintage clothing store on Bleecker Street and spent a good hour just browsing. it’s a treasure trove of forgotten styles. i found a denim jacket that felt like it had a story to tell. I feel like I am going to learn so much about the city and its history.

*Pro-Tip:* Get a cheap coffee. Seriously. You’ll need it. and don’t be afraid to get lost. Some of the best discoveries are made when you wander aimlessly. i'm thinking of trying some outdoor yoga here - there are a bunch of studios popping up around the city.

I overheard a couple talking at a coffee shop about the weird history of the Congress Avenue Bridge. Apparently, it was almost destroyed by a tornado in the 1970s. Talk about a close call!

The light here is amazing - that golden hour glow is hitting everything just right. i just checked and it's…there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. I've found a really cool little art gallery tucked away on a side street. check it out if you're nearby. they’re doing a retrospective of some local street artists - awesome stuff.
