Athens Through a Shutter: Foggy Wanderings & Grumpy Locals
waking up to that particular kind of damp cold that seeps into your bones. just peeked at the weather app and it's hovering around 11 degrees right now, feels like the air itself is giving you side-eye, if that's your thing. grabbed my camera and a thermos of burnt coffee because that's how we roll. athens today smells like wet stone and something vaguely fried from a street vendor i passed near monastiraki.
started my day at the acropolis because apparently i enjoy walking uphill in low-hanging clouds. the parthenon looked like a smudge against the sky, which honestly might be the best shot i've gotten all week. then wandered into plaka, where every shopkeeper tried to sell me the same dusty postcards. *anafiotika is this hidden neighborhood up there, though. all white walls and bougainvillea spilling over like they don't care about tourism season. if you run out of things to do, you can always hitch a ride to piraeus for some actual港口 vibes in under an hour.
heard a rumor from this guy with a guitar at syntagma square that the real athens eats at kuzina or taverna katsaros, not the fancy spots on tripadvisor. check out what folks say on yelp if you're skeptical. also, some drunk guy in exarchia swore the best souvlakia aren't even in the center. he pointed vaguely north and mumbled something about psyrri before stumbling off.
ended up in gazi district chasing some insane street art. whole buildings covered in murals that look like they were painted last night or ten years ago - hard to tell. the technopolis* complex there is this old gasworks turned cultural space, which is kind of perfect for athens. all industrial decay and suddenly a photo exhibit. locals warned me the area gets sketchy after midnight but by then i was already back in my hostel eating mystery cheese from the corner store. here's what the lonely planet forums say if you want the real gossip from people who aren't me.
captured this one shot of a stray cat mid-yawn on the metro steps. that's going in my portfolio. probably.
