asuncion's sticky air: a nomad's sweaty diary

just landed in asuncion and my laptop’s already sweating more than me. checked the weather - it's basically 38 degrees right now with that extra 41-degree-feels-like punch. if you're into that kind of thing, i guess. the locals say it's normal, but my clothes are staging a rebellion against this heat.

the vibe here is... chaotic in a good way. streets are loud, the air’s thick, and everyone seems to know everyone else. heard a rumor that the central market is a must-see, but also that it’s a maze where you’ll either find your favorite empanada or get lost for days. someone told me that if you wander into the wrong alley, you’ll stumble into a family barbecue that’s been going since 2002. seems legit.

if you get bored (ha!), ciudad del este is a short bus ride away. heard it’s like a wild west for electronics, but also that you should probably keep your wallet on a leash. local gossip says the best coffee shop is hidden behind a bookstore called el café de los libros, but when i asked a guy at the bar, he just laughed and said, “it’s a secret, man.”

the humidity’s at 34%, which means my hair’s doing its own thing today. met this dude at a hostel who swore the best view is from the *palacio de los López at sunset, but also warned me that mosquitoes there think i’m a walking buffet. checked out this yelp page for more deets, but most reviews are in spanish - which i don’t speak. oops.

also heard that the
mercado de artesanos is where you’ll find the real deals, but only if you haggle like you mean it. a local mom told me, “if they smile too much, you’re paying too much.” which is... helpful? maybe.

“the heat here is like a bad ex - it won’t leave, but you kinda miss it when it’s gone.” - some guy at a bar

anyway, if you’re into sweating, street art that’s somehow both ancient and modern, and food that’ll make your taste buds dance, this place is it. just bring extra water and maybe a fan. this tripadvisor guide says the
museo del barro* is worth it, but i haven’t braved the heat yet. will report back. maybe.
