Accra: Drumming Under a Blazing Sky
you ever land somewhere and feel like the air’s punching you in the face? that’s accra. 30.56°c and 14% humidity-feels like the sun’s on a personal vendetta. i just checked and it’s basically an outdoor sauna right now, hope you like that kind of thing.
first night here, i stumbled into a tiny bar in osu after my flight. the guy running it, kwame, said he’d been a session drummer for highlife bands back in the ‘90s. “play like your life depends on it,” he told me, tapping out a rhythm on his beer bottle. i tried keeping up on a borrowed djembe and sounded like a toddler with a pot and spoon. but kwame just laughed, poured me another star beer, and said, “next time, hit the center harder.”
next morning, i’m wandering through makola market. chaos in the best way-vendors shouting, colors everywhere, the smell of smoked fish and fresh pineapple cutting through the heat. someone told me the best kelewele (spicy fried plantains) is sold by a woman near the north entrance. “she’ll give you extra pepper if you smile,” a local whispered. i did, and she did.
accra’s not just heat and hustle. labadi beach at sunset is unreal-drum circles pop up, people dancing barefoot in the sand. i heard from a surfer i met that busua beach down south is quieter if you need a break from the city pulse. and if you get bored, kumasi and cape coast are just a short drive away.
food-wise, i kept hearing about choimi’s jollof rice. “it’ll ruin all other jollof for you,” a girl at the bar swore. she wasn’t wrong. also, check out +233 jazz bar & grill if you want to catch live bands-TripAdvisor says it’s touristy, but the energy’s legit.
random tip: carry cash. lots of smaller spots don’t take cards, and the atm lines can be brutal. also, download an offline map-cell signal’s fine in the city but can vanish fast outside.
accra’s not a place you admire from a distance. it grabs you, roasts you under its sun, then hands you a cold beer and a rhythm to call your own. if you’re coming, pack light, bring curiosity, and leave room for chaos. you’ll need it.
p.s. if you’re into photography, the golden hour here is chef’s kiss. check out my flickr for some shots when i get a decent wifi spot.
