Wetzlar: Rain, Cameras, and a Seriously Chill Vibe

okay, so i just stumbled into Wetzlar, germany. it wasn’t exactly on my ‘must-see’ list, honestly. i was chasing a lead on a vintage camera shop - a real hole-in-the-wall place supposedly brimming with leica goodness. i’m a freelance photographer, and let me tell you, finding those gems is like…finding oxygen.

this place is…damp. i just checked and it’s actively weeping from the sky right now, which is fine, actually. it gives everything this moody, film-noir feel. the temperature’s hovering around four degrees, but it feels like zero, which is a whole different level of chill. the humidity is a solid sixty-six percent, so my hair is doing things i didn’t know it could. pressure’s normal, i guess. who even cares about pressure when you’re hunting for vintage glass?

i spent the morning wandering around the old town, which is ridiculously picturesque. think half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets, and a general sense of ‘i’ve stepped into a fairytale.’ i overheard someone at a *cafe complaining about the tourists, which, honestly, is always a good sign. it means it’s worth visiting. i found the camera shop, by the way. it’s called “Foto Fiedler” (you can find some chatter about it on this local forum: https://www.wetzlar-tourismus.de/en/). the owner, a guy named herr schmidt, looks like he’s been repairing cameras since the invention of photography. he’s gruff, but he knows his stuff.

“apparently, he once refused to sell a rare lens to a famous photographer because he didn’t like his beard.”

that’s what the barista told me, anyway. i’m taking it with a grain of salt. i did manage to snag a mint-condition leica summilux 50mm f/1.4, though, so i’m not complaining. it cost me a small fortune, but it’s an investment, right? right?

the people here are…reserved. not unfriendly, just…german. i tried asking for directions to a good
restaurant and got a ten-minute lecture on the proper way to pronounce “straßenbahn.” i think i offended him. i’m sticking to pointing at things from now on. someone told me that the italian place near the market square is decent, but that the portions are tiny. i also heard that the brewery does a mean schnitzel. i’m leaning towards the schnitzel. you can check out some reviews on Yelp: https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=Restaurants&find_loc=Wetzlar%2C+Germany.

i’ve been meaning to check out the ernst leitz museum, it's supposed to be really good. i'm hoping to find some inspiration there. if you get bored,
frankfurt is just a short train ride away, and marburg* is also pretty close.

The ernst leitz museum stands under a cloudy sky.

honestly, i wasn’t expecting much from Wetzlar, but it’s growing on me. it’s got a quiet charm, a fascinating history, and a surprising number of vintage camera shops. plus, the rain is kind of atmospheric. i’m thinking i’ll stay another day. maybe i’ll even try to learn how to pronounce “straßenbahn” correctly. or not. you can find more info about the city here: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g198488-Wetzlar_Hesse-Vacations.html. and if you're into photography, this site has some great resources: https://www.dpreview.com/
