Valparaíso: Chasing Murals, Coffee, and Chaos

so i landed in valparaíso after a bumpy bus ride from santiago, my backpack smelling like last night's hostel pizza. the air here is different-salty, sticky, like the ocean's trying to hug you whether you want it or not. i just checked and it's 20.54°c right now, feels like 20.14°c, so yeah, basically perfect for wandering around with no plan. the humidity's at 57%, which means my hair's already plotting its escape from my head.

walking down cerro alegre, i noticed every wall is basically a canvas. street art here is not a side hustle-it's the main event. i overheard a local say, "if you don't have a mural, do you even exist?" and honestly, i believe it. i stopped at a tiny café called *café coléctivo for a flat white that tasted like it was roasted by angels. someone told me the barista used to be a philosophy student who quit to perfect his latte art. i believe that too.

"don't trust the funiculars after 10pm, they get weird,"

a drunk guy warned me at the bar. i didn't listen. the funicular was fine. the guy was probably just projecting.

if you get bored, viña del mar and concón are just a short drive away, but honestly, why would you leave this maze of color and chaos? valparaíso doesn't beg for your attention-it grabs it, paints it, and hangs it on a wall for everyone to see.

i tried to find the house of pablo neruda, but got distracted by a secondhand bookstore run by a cat who seemed to judge my life choices. the owner said, "he only likes people who read poetry aloud." so i read him a bad haiku about toast. he seemed unimpressed.

"the best empanadas are at that cart near the port, but only if you get there before noon,"

a woman whispered to me while we waited for the bus. i trusted her. she had the look of someone who knew her empanadas.

i ended up at the fish market just as the sun was setting, eating ceviche that made my eyes water in the best way. the smell of the ocean mixed with frying fish and something sweet i couldn't place. maybe it was just the salt in the air playing tricks.

the weather's mild, the people are warmer, and the street dogs have better style than i do. if you're into murals, messy vibes, and coffee that'll ruin you for all other coffee, this is your place.

check out
tripadvisor for more on cerro alegre's art walks, or yelp* if you need help finding that empanada cart. and maybe, just maybe, let the city surprise you. it usually does.
