Tokyo Drift (and a Whole Lot of Confusion)

okay, so. tokyo. wow. just…wow. i’m still trying to process it all, honestly. i landed a few days ago, and it’s been a whirlwind of neon, vending machines, and trying to figure out which chopstick is for what. i’m a touring session drummer, you see, and i got snagged for a short run with a band called 'Electric Geishas' - don’t ask. it’s…a thing.

I’m staying in Shinjuku, which is… intense. Like, sensory overload intense. The whole place vibrates with a low hum of energy. I just checked and it’s spitting a fine, icy drizzle right now, hope you like that kind of thing. It’s cold enough to make your fingers ache when you’re trying to navigate the subway - and trust me, navigating the subway is an Olympic sport.

I’ve been trying to soak it all in, you know? Beyond the gig, which is… well, let’s just say the drummer before me quit mid-tour. Apparently, the lead singer’s obsession with interpretive dance during solos was a bit much. I’m trying to be chill about it.

Speaking of soaking things in, I spent a morning wandering through *Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. It was surprisingly peaceful, a little pocket of calm amidst the chaos. I even saw a couple getting engaged! Super cheesy, but also kinda sweet. Check out some reviews on TripAdvisor if you're looking for a break from the city bustle: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g305413-d667339-Reviews-Shinjuku_Gyoen_National_Garden-Tokyo_Tokyo_Prefecture_Kanto.html.

I’ve been eating
everything. Ramen, sushi, takoyaki… I’m pretty sure I’ve gained five pounds just from the sheer joy of it all. I stumbled upon this tiny, hole-in-the-wall place in Golden Gai - seriously, it’s like stepping back in time. Someone told me that the owner, a little old lady named Hana, makes the best okonomiyaki in the city. I didn’t argue. Yelp has some decent reviews, too: https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=okonomiyaki&find_loc=Tokyo.

I’m trying to pick up some vintage clothes, too. The
Shimokitazawa* district is supposed to be the place for that. I’ve spent hours sifting through racks of amazing stuff, but my Japanese is… lacking. I ended up buying a bright pink kimono. Don’t judge. It’s a souvenir. I found a forum with some local tips: https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2168.html.

If you get bored, Yokohama and Kawasaki are just a short drive away. I haven’t made it out there yet, but I’m planning a day trip soon.

I overheard some drunk salarymen arguing about the best karaoke bar in Shibuya. Apparently, “Karaoke Kan” is the place to be, but “Big Echo” has better lighting. It’s a serious debate, apparently.

I’m also trying to find some decent coffee. I’m a drummer, not a barbarian. I need my caffeine. I heard that something a local warned me about was the prevalence of vending machines selling… everything. Like, soup and umbrellas and ties. It’s wild. I’m looking for a good cafe, though. Maybe something with a cool vibe. I’ll update you if I find one.

Okay, gotta run. Electric Geishas are calling. Wish me luck. And send coffee.
