The Humid Heart of Tainan: A Drummer's Survival Guide

first thing i noticed when i rolled into tainan was the humidity-it's like breathing through a wet sponge. the weather report said 29.88°c but feels like 34.75°c, which is basically drummer-speak for 'bring extra water and pray your snare doesn't warp.' i just checked and it's still a sauna there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

i'm here with my beat-up kit, hunting for the next gig. the streets are alive with night markets, temple incense, and the occasional scooter zipping past like it's got a personal vendetta. someone told me that the best street food is down an alley near guohua street-supposedly the oyster omelets will change your life, but the lines are brutal. i queued for 20 minutes, sweat pooling in my shoes, and yeah, it was worth it.

if you get bored, kaohsiung and chiayi are just a short drive away, and both have their own weird charm. kaohsiung's got a killer harbor scene, while chiayi is all about that slow-paced tea house life. i heard from a drunk local at a 7-eleven that chiayi's sunset over the mountains is 'mandatory viewing,' whatever that means.

practicing in my hostel room is a nightmare-walls are thinner than my patience. i've taken to busking in the park near anping fort, where the old banyan trees give decent shade and the tourists are generous if you can keep a groove going for more than three minutes. someone said the fort itself is haunted, but i think that's just the humidity playing tricks.

for gear, i've learned the hard way: bring silica gel packs, a microfiber towel for your kit, and extra drum keys-they vanish like free beer at a soundcheck. if you're hunting for a practice space, check out the community centers; they rent out rooms cheap, but you gotta book early or you'll end up in a karaoke bar by mistake.

i've been hitting up *Tainan* music shops for sticks and heads. the owners are chill, but they'll judge your taste in cymbals. one guy tried to sell me a cracked ride, swore it had 'mojo.' i passed.

this city's rhythm is slower than Taipei's, but it's got soul. just don't expect anyone to understand why you lug a full kit around. they'll think you're either a pro or completely mad. maybe both.
