Sheffield's Grit & Ghosts (and Why My Drumsticks Smell Like Rain)
okay, so sheffield. it’s…a lot. i’m still trying to process it, honestly. landed yesterday, and it immediately felt like stepping into a really cool, slightly damp, industrial poem. i’m a touring session drummer, right? so i’m used to weird venues and even weirder towns, but this place has a vibe.
first off, the weather. i just glanced out the window and it’s…actively brooding. like, the clouds are having a serious conversation about something. the temperature’s hovering around fifteen point five seven celsius, but it feels colder, you know? like fourteen point seven two. the air’s thick with humidity - fifty-nine percent, apparently - and the pressure’s a bit wonky at one thousand and eleven. it’s the kind of weather that makes your cymbals sound extra moody.
spent most of today wandering around kelham island. it’s all converted warehouses and craft breweries now, which is cool, but you can still feel the history. apparently, it was a major steel-making hub. i overheard someone in a pub - the *kelham island tavern, i think - saying that the ghosts of the steelworkers still wander the streets at night. naturally, i’m intrigued. i’ve been chasing spooky stories on tour for years.
“apparently, old man Hemmings still haunts the Cutlery Works. Keeps rearranging the knives.”
that’s what the bartender told me, anyway. he seemed pretty convinced. i checked out the cutlery works (https://www.cutleryworks.co.uk/) and it’s seriously impressive. all those tools and blades… definitely a place where a restless spirit could hang out.
food-wise, i’ve been living on pie and mash. someone warned me about the greasy spoon cafes near the city hall (https://www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk/) - said they’re “an experience.” they weren’t wrong. it’s proper, no-nonsense grub. i also stumbled upon a really good thai place on ecclesall road. i think it was called “somewhere thai” or something equally vague.
my neighbors seem to be mostly students and artists. if you get restless, chesterfield and rotherham are just a quick train ride away. i’ve been trying to find a decent record store, but no luck so far. someone told me there’s a hidden gem in abbeydale road, but i haven’t had a chance to check it out yet. i’ve been reading reviews on Yelp and it seems like a mixed bag.
gear-wise, i’m traveling light, as always:
*Drumsticks: Vic Firth 5A (they’re starting to smell like the sheffield rain, which is…a mood).
*In-ear monitors: Shure SE215 (essential for blocking out the sound of grumpy ghosts).
*Noise-canceling headphones: Sony WH-1000XM4 (for when i need a break from the brooding).
*Portable recorder: Zoom H4n Pro (gotta capture those spooky sounds!).
and honestly? i’m exhausted. playing a gig tonight at a place called “the leadmill” (https://www.leadmill.co.uk/). wish me luck. i have a feeling it’s going to be a weird one. i’m also thinking of checking out some of the local history museums, maybe the weston park museum* (https://www.museums-sheffield.org.uk/museums/weston-park-museum).
