Rotterdam Rumble: Rain, Ramen, and Seriously Weird Art
okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. 459411… seriously, what even is that number? it just popped into my head. and 1428952300? don’t ask. i’m not touching it. the air here in Rotterdam feels…thick. like wet wool. it’s 93% humidity, and i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the pressure’s 1018, which is…fine, i guess? it’s not actively trying to crush me, which is a win.
I landed yesterday, and honestly, it’s a sensory overload. the architecture is just…off. brutalist concrete meets these crazy, colorful street art murals. it’s like someone threw a rainbow at a factory. i’m staying in this tiny Airbnb near the Markthal - it’s basically a giant, indoor food market. someone told me that the best stroopwafels are found there, but i’m still skeptical. i need caffeine. desperately.
Spent the morning wandering the Delfshaven district. it’s like stepping back in time - all those old warehouses and canals. i stumbled across this tiny ramen shop, ‘Ramen Riot,’ and it was…intense. the broth was this deep, smoky pork flavor, and they had pickled everything. i heard that the owner, a guy named Hiro, used to be a competitive sumo wrestler. wild. i’m trying to find a decent coffee spot, but everything seems to be serving this weird, overly-sweet Dutch coffee. ugh.
I’m trying to capture the vibe, you know? the weirdness. i’m mostly just documenting it for my Insta, tbh. it’s a struggle. i’m thinking of hitting up the Cube Houses - those are supposed to be pretty trippy. i’m also planning a trip to Kinderdijk, the windmills. check out the official site here: https://www.kinderdijk.nl/en/
Speaking of weird, i ran into this group of guys sketching in the Markthal. they were drawing these incredibly detailed portraits of people, but they were all wearing clown noses. seriously. i asked them about it, and one of them just shrugged and said, “it’s an artistic statement.” whatever. i’m starting to think Rotterdam is just a giant, slightly unsettling performance art piece.
I’m also trying to find some vintage clothes. Rotterdam has a surprisingly good selection, but it’s a hunt. i’m hoping to find some cool denim jackets. i’m always on the lookout for a good deal. check out this local vintage shop: https://www.vintagestyle.nl/
If you get bored, Amsterdam is just a short drive away. or Utrecht, for that matter. it’s a pretty easy train ride. i’m trying to avoid the tourist traps, though. i’m more interested in the gritty, underbelly stuff. i heard that there’s a really cool underground music scene here, but i haven’t found it yet.
I’m seriously considering just buying a campervan and living here. it would be a disaster, probably, but a glorious disaster. i need to start saving. and maybe get a new pair of socks. these are starting to smell.
Someone told me that the best place to see the street art is in the Katendrecht district. apparently, it’s a total explosion of color and creativity. i’m going to check it out tomorrow. i also need to find a decent place to get a proper Dutch beer. i’m tired of this sweet coffee.
Someone I met at the hostel said, 'Rotterdam is like a broken mirror - beautiful in its imperfections.' I'm not sure I agree, but it's a decent thought.
I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed, to be honest. the rain is coming down in sheets, and i’m pretty sure i’ve eaten three bowls of ramen in the last four hours. but it’s…interesting. it’s definitely not boring. i’m going to go find a dark corner and try to write this down before i completely lose my mind. check out some local events here: https://www.rotterdam.nl/en/events
My taxi driver, a grumpy old guy named Jan, just muttered, 'Don't go near the docks after dark. You don't want trouble.' I'm intrigued.
Okay, that’s enough rambling for now. need more coffee. seriously. and maybe a nap. or a therapist. probably both.
