Rotterdam Rhapsody: Rain, Rumors, and Really Weird Vibes
okay, so, i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. 3073699 and 1203557079… honestly, those numbers just keep swirling around in my head like a bad synth line. i landed in Rotterdam yesterday, and it’s… intense. like, aggressively intense. the air smells like saltwater and something vaguely industrial, which is… a thing.
The weather? i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. persistent drizzle, a grey sky that feels like it’s judging my life choices, and a humidity that’s clinging to you like a second skin. it’s not bad, per se, just… unsettling. the pressure is 1026, humidity 74, sea level 1026, ground level 986. sounds like a medical report, right? it’s Rotterdam.
I’m staying in this tiny studio apartment near the *Markthal - seriously, that building is a spectacle. it’s basically a giant, covered food market. i overheard a guy at the bar (he was wearing a fedora and nursing a beer, naturally) telling me that someone told him the Markthal is haunted by the ghost of a disgruntled cheese merchant. wild, i know. i’m not saying it’s true, but i’m also not not saying it’s true.
Spent the afternoon wandering around the Kralingse Bos, which is like, a massive park that feels completely separate from the city. it’s got a lake, a botanical garden, and a bunch of weird sculptures. i saw a guy practicing Tai Chi in the middle of it all, which was… a vibe.
I’m trying to capture the energy of the place with my camera, but it’s hard. Rotterdam feels like a city that’s constantly rebuilding itself, constantly reinventing itself. there’s a gritty beauty to it, a sense of resilience. it’s not postcard pretty, but it’s definitely something.
Speaking of gritty, someone told me that the best place to get a herring sandwich is at a stall near the Euromast. i’m skeptical, but i’m also hungry. i’ll report back.
Here’s a quick gear list, because i’m obsessed with lists:
Waterproof jacket (obviously)
Comfortable boots (essential for all the walking)
Camera (duh)
Notebook and pen (for capturing all the weirdness)
A ridiculously large coffee mug
I also checked out a local board for events - apparently there’s a street art festival happening next week. might be worth checking out. https://www.rotterdam.nl/en/
If you get bored, Amsterdam is just a short drive away. Seriously, it’s like, 45 minutes on the train.
And, you know, if you’re looking for a good place to eat, Yelp has some decent options. https://www.yelp.com/
I heard that the *Cube Houses are a must-see, but they’re also incredibly crowded. go early if you want to avoid the masses.
“Don’t trust the pigeons,” a woman with bright pink hair told me at the cafe. “They’re watching you. Always watching.”
Seriously, the pigeons are unsettling.
I’m heading out to explore the Witte de Withstraat* now - it’s supposed to have some amazing vintage shops. wish me luck.
“The best way to experience Rotterdam is to get lost,” a slightly drunk guy shouted at me from a bar. “Just wander around and see what happens.”
I’m taking him at his word.
And one last thing: if you’re looking for a place to stay, TripAdvisor has some good deals. https://www.tripadvisor.com/
Okay, I’m signing off for now. my brain is starting to feel like scrambled eggs.
Later, Rotterdam!
