nadi's latest chaos: photos that might not be real
i woke up at 5 am because the mosquitoes were staging a coup outside my open window. no drama, just five minutes of pure assault. but then i saw a macaw drop a coconut on the ground and it was like⦠whatever. so i grabbed my camera and chased it. the macaw didnāt even care. weird.
this place is sticky. humid. the kind of humidity that clings to your skin and makes your breath visible even when youāre sprinting. i just checked and itās 22.56 degrees, which means literally nothing is dry. my boots are now 60% algae. i donāt care. iām pressing this into the āvibing in nadiā photo album.
so whatās the deal with the locals? well, i heard that some tourist wrote a yelp review claiming the market was overrun by smuggling. i didnāt see any suspicious packages, but i did see a man selling mint leaves wrapped in a plastic bag labeled āspecial nectar.ā asked him if it was real. he just stared at me like iād asked if the sun was up. it was fine.
hereās a pro tip: if you stay in a guesthouse near the airport, your neighbors might be actual clones of you. like, i swear one old man was snoring at 3 am. not because he was tired. maybe he was charging his phone? or practicing a lullaby for the ants? i donāt know. the point is, this town has a vibe. itās not deep, itās not spa-like, itās just⦠there. and thatās fine by me.
i took these photos last night. one shows a banana tree weeping. not metaphorically. literally. i think it was just super thirsty. another picture is of a toddler refusing to let me take his photo because he thought i was here to steal his banana. classic nadi.
someone told me that the coffee here is made with soil from a volcano. i bought a cup from a vendor named luke, who had a tattoo of a snail on his arm. luke said the snail was his lucky charm because it once survived a typhoon. i donāt believe in luck, but iām still drinking this coffee. itās weirdly good. i just checked and itās 23.25 feels-like degrees out now. which means iām sweating but also chewing mint leaves as mouthwash. classic.
if you get bored, fiji is just a short drive away. like, really short. i walked 10 minutes and accidentally found a beach with a tiny mountain. it was amazing. also, i heard a review that the water there was "too clear, like itās lying." i threw a rock in and it spun like a disco ball. maybe iām exaggerating. maybe.
hereās another thing: i saw a sign at a yoga studio that said āmaximum 15% discount if you bring your own mat.ā i did that exact thing. my mat was covered in sand and smelled like coconut oil. the instructor didnāt care. we did downward dog on a log. it was alright.
i heard the museum was closed because of a parrot rebellion. donāt ask me for details. just donāt go there expecting sheets of history. i think the parrots are just hippies who donāt like crowds. probably.
"if you film this beach, youāll get banned," someone whispered through a fm radio last week. i think they were a lifeguard.lockquote>
i also found this yellow brooch at the market. it looked like it belonged in a 1970s sci-fi movie. i asked if it was for sale. the old lady said it was her great-auntās and she kept it because "itās got good energy." i bought it for $5. now itās glued to my backpack because i canāt stop thinking itās magically connected to the volcano coffee.
hereās the deal: nadi isnāt fancy. itās not going to give you a postcard aesthetic. youāll find moldy vegetables, stray dogs in designer clothes, and wifi that crashes every time you watch a TikTok. but itās alive. like, it never stops doing something weird. i mean, there was a guy playing the saxophone in front of a closed bank. he was 70. he didnāt seem sad.
if you need advice, ask luke. heāll tell you to trust the macaws. i did. iām still trusting them.

p.s. iām 70% sure the monkey in this photo (image source) stole my snack. do not redistribute without his autograph.
