merida through the lens of a freelance photographer

merida’s got this sticky heat that clings to your camera straps like it’s trying to make friends. i just checked and it’s currently offering *21.84°C with 97% humidity - basically a free facial if you stay outside too long. locals call it the sweat season but i call it nature’s diffuser for harsh shadows. perfect for shooting those moody colonial doorways without squinting.

wandered into gran mercado this morning. the light hitting the
ceiling frescoes at 8am? chef’s kiss. but heard this gem from a juice vendor: “that main plaza? locals call it ‘the lizard’s nap spot’ because it’s always 10 degrees hotter there after noon. bring your own hammock.”

“if you’re shooting the cathedral at golden hour, stand by the ice cream cart for shade. they’ll ‘accidentally’ bump your tripod if it’s in their way. no refunds.”

someone told me that the
parque zoológico’s flamingos are actually just really committed local actors. i’m calling bullshit until i see a union card. same person insisted the cenote azul changes color based on your mood. my camera sensor didn’t pick up on that vibe, but maybe i was dehydrated.

if you get bored,
valladolid is a short drive away and has way fewer iguanas judging your technique. also found this local photo group that meets at los aluxes cavern every tuesday. bring a tripod and a sense of humor about humidity fogging your viewfinder.

“ya’ll think you’re sneaky shooting the mercado at dusk? the fruit vendors have a betting pool on which tourist will trip over a pile of papaya. camera gear not included in compensation.”

pro tip: the
calle 60* murals look best shot through the steam from a nearby café. also, this taco stand has a sign that says ‘no photos during siesta’. guess who got yelled at in three languages? me. worth it for their cochinita pibil though.
