manila: sticky fingers, shutter clicks, and two numbers that won't quit

i'm sitting in this tiny cafe in manila, sweat pooling under my camera strap, and i swear my lens is fogging up just from looking at the humidity. i just checked and it's a steamy 23 degrees with 78% humidity that makes your hair poof like you've been electrocuted. feels like 23.48? more like feels like i'm melting into a puddle of film grain. the weather app says pressure's 1013 mb, whatever that means. all i know is my shirt is stuck to my back and the air is so thick you could cut it with a Nikon. i've been here three days and i still haven't figured out if the rain is coming or if it's just the air conditioning units weeping.

i came here as a freelance photographer, chasing that 'golden hour' glow everyone raves about. but manila's golden hour is more like a humid, hazy, half-asleep stare from a jeepney driver. still, there's something about the way the light bounces off the exhaust fumes and the neon signs at night - it's gritty, it's real, it's not some instagram fantasy. i've been walking around the districts of binondo, intramuros, and quezon city with my camera hanging around my neck, feeling like a tourist magnet. everyone from the ukay-ukay vendors to the security guards has an opinion on where i should point my lens.

someone told me that the best view of the bay is from the bridge near the Cultural Center, but i heard that it's packed with couples taking selfies and the smell of street food is so strong you'll lose your appetite. i decided to check it out anyway. i walked across the bridge around sunset, the sky a bruise-purple and orange, and the water reflecting the city lights like scattered glitter. i snapped a few shots, trying to catch the silhouette of the jeepneys against the glowing skyline. here's a pic i took (or at least a similar vibe):

speaking of pictures, my camera's acting weird. i keep seeing these timestamps pop up: 7391131 and 1608357652. i don't know what's going on - maybe the battery is dying or the internal clock is possessed. i tried resetting it, but the numbers keep appearing. i asked a local repair guy in quiapo, and he just shrugged and said 'that's how old cameras talk to you.' i'm not buying it. i googled those numbers in the middle of the night (jet lag is real) and found a forum thread where someone claimed they're coordinates to a hidden bar in binondo that serves the best sisig. but i think that's just drunk talk. still, i can't stop thinking about it. maybe i'll find a clue in my own photos.

food-wise, i've been living on mangoes and cheap noodles from the street. i read on Yelp that a place called 'Jollibee' is a must, but that's like saying McDonalds is a must. i went anyway, because i needed something that felt familiar. the chickenjoy was actually pretty good, but the lines are insane. i overheard two tourists arguing about whether the spaghetti there is an abomination or a revelation. i'm still undecided. if you want something more authentic, i heard from a bartender in makati that there's a hole-in-the-wall in pasig that serves the best kare-kare. but good luck finding it - it's not on google maps, just a red door with a flickering neon sign. i'll attach a blurry photo i took of the street:

the humidity is no joke. i've never felt so… sticky. my camera gear is sweating. i keep getting these fogged lenses. i tried using those silica gel packets but they just turn into a slushy mess. i might invest in a dehumidifier for my bag. someone on a photography forum recommended putting rice in a sock - i tried it, it just made my bag smell like a philippine kitchen. not ideal.

if you need a break from the city heat, tagaytay's cooler climes are only a couple hours south. i haven't made it there yet, but i've heard the view of taal volcano is worth the traffic. also, batangas beaches are a couple hours south - perfect for a quick escape from the city chaos. but honestly, i'm kinda loving the chaos. it's energizing, in a weird way. the jeepney colors, the blaring horns, the endless stream of people selling peanuts, newspapers, and lottery tickets on the street - it's a symphony of noise that slowly becomes white noise, and then you start to hear the rhythms underneath.

i also took a day trip to antipolo, where the air is slightly cooler and you can get a panoramic view of the metro. here's a map to give you a sense of the area:

.

i've been using TripAdvisor to find decent hotels, but i ended up in this tiny guesthouse in ernesto rabina where the owner feeds you breakfast that's better than any hotel buffet. i'm not gonna name names because i'm scared they'll get popular and prices will go up. but if you ask around, someone will point you in the right direction. just say 'where's the place with the amazing tapsilog?' and they'll know. i also stumbled upon a local board called 'Pinoy Travel Forum' where strangers exchange tips like 'avoid the pasig river at night' and 'the best time to visit the sm mall is during a thunderstorm because it's empty.' i've linked it below - it's a goldmine for weird, unfiltered advice.

overheard gossip: i was eating at a carinderia (that's a local eatery) and two guys at the next table were debating the best way to get to the airport. one said 'take the skyway, it's faster', the other said 'no, the coastal road is less traffic during rush hour'. they almost came to blows. i just nodded and finished my adobo. lesson learned: never trust a man who claims to know manila traffic patterns.

i also heard that a famous street artist from cebu is secretly painting murals around intramuros. i haven't seen any, but i'm keeping an eye out. if you spot one, take a pic - they're rumored to be signed with a tiny crab symbol. i'll update if i find any.

as for my weird numbers, i decided to test them. i typed 7391131 into google maps and it took me to some random spot in the middle of manila bay. maybe it's a phone number? but it's too long. 1608357652 might be a tracking number for a package i never ordered. i'm starting to think my camera is just messing with me. maybe it's a glitch that happens when you shoot in manual mode too long. i'll get it checked when i get home. until then, i'll keep shooting and let the weirdness fuel my creativity.

i'm writing this from the cafe, the power just went out (again), and my laptop battery is at 12%. i need to wrap this up. if you're planning a trip to manila, bring an extra shirt, a microfiber cloth for your lens, and a sense of humor. the city will chew you up and spit you out, but you'll come back with stories (and maybe a few weird numbers in your photos). check out these links for more practical info: TripAdvisor - Manila, Yelp - Best Eats in Manila, and this local board i mentioned: Pinoy Travel Forum. also, if you're into photography, read this piece on capturing the 'pearl of the orient' without getting your gear stolen: Lonely Planet's Photo Guide.

i'll leave you with one of the few clear shots i got:

Filipino street food

. that's a bowl of adobo, i think. or maybe it's sinigang. i'm too tired to remember. anyway, enjoy the mess.
